Any race you feel like playing. Piracy is one of of the most equal-opportunity careers on Azeroth, you can see pirates of practically all races in quests. Heck, the second in command in Booty Bay is a tauren pirate (and has an utterly hilarious quest involving him).
Lanaar had been pent up all of his life. Each day another battle, each battle another friend lost to the foulness of the Legion. Time held no meaning, and its passage was marked by unpleasantly empty bunk beds rather than minutes.
How the High Exarch expected Lanaar to adjust to peacetime and a whole world at his hooves is anyone’s guess. What was clear was that evil reigned unchecked even here, but the Horde would soon learn what righteous wrath meant on the high seas.
Of course Lanaar’s ship and crew didn’t pay for themselves. Besides, who would miss the Horde cargo at the bottom of the sea?
I disagree with “any race”; there’s races with strong-set morals or high culture that don’t quite fit most pirate scenes. A Nightborne pirate crew could work on their own as corsairs, but I can’t really imagine a Nightborne character in a ragtag crew of buccaneers. After all, their only major contribution to the initial 4th war was complaining about dust on a Zandalar coast. Lightforged Draenei - quite evident, when a character is predisposed to be lawful-X they don’t make good pirates.
Humans, orcs, trolls, goblins, gnomes, mechagnomes, forsaken, kul’tirans, dwarves, dark iron dwarves, worgen, pandaren, mag’har, vulpera and tauren slight-ish. And some non-playable races (that you can prism): gnolls, ogres, oafs, hozen, jinyu,
I can imagine dedicated crews roleplaying a set corsair ship for Night Elves, Blood Elves, Nightborne, Zandalari & void elves. I can’t really see these races being in mixed crews. A themed ship/crew could also do wonders for forsaken, goblins and gnomes too.
Then you have some interesting ideas for dedicated / themed crews from non-playable races. Vrykul or Kvaldir are the first ones that come to mind, which are beautiful concepts with lots of opportunities.
I personally would see them as more official privateers.
I can absolutely see a crew of any of these races having their own ship and privateering, attacking any ships that may pose a threat to them and taking their plunder for their own people (setting aside a healthy sum for themselves too, of course).
I’d argue that Zandalari being just a regular pirate would make sense though, their society is born into a caste type, and its shown in game there are many very deprived lower class Zandalari that I could absolutely see joining a pirate crew, especially with their races’ reputation for the navy.
The Southsea Freebooters have draenei and blood elven captains, the Bilge Rats have everything from sauroks to deep sea murlocs and ettins. Thalo’thas Brightsun in Booty Bay is the high elven captain of a group of smugglers and privateers. Tauren are funnily enough one of the most common races found as pirates based on NPCs.
They might be the exception to the norm of their races, but with a valid enough explanation, a member of nearly all playable races in WoW can have their reasons for turning to piracy.
Everyone above has the right of it, some races fit better than others for sure. But above and beyond the best? Humans and Undead, at least from my experience. But there’s absolutely no harm (and plenty of potential) in going a bit more niche.
