In my head I love the type of mage that is a mix between a warrior and mage. I’m somewhat knowledgeable with the lore and understand there’s no real way to have a melee mage in game, but wanted to ask your opinion about having my head canon that my Blood Elf is some sort of Battle Mage that is more adept with magic but still can wield a sword. (Like Anastarian Sunstrider) This is simply for my own lore immersion. So would this work and is there some in game way to make it look more real? Mages can wield swords right? Many thanks for your input <3.

I have seen the battlemage/spellbreaker IC class been done before and it isn’t a uncanon thing to do in Warcraft. Mages can already use swords ingame so and id go check out for the gear pieces that perhaps are more metal than cloth.
I have seen several where they switch from swordplay to magic during battle and/or combine the two. It is very beliveable.

Battle mages are absolutely fine, you can be anything from artillery mage with a blade to poke people with as a last resort to a more in your face short range to melee fighter, you can throw fireballs or set your sword on fire etc. Sky is the limit basically. I’d say just check the mogs and see what inspires you.
I think the only issue really is off hands (dont forget to equip off hand along with your sword if youre doing content on the char as well). The mogs are kinda limited, there are some nice books/tomes, some staff-like off hands for that Gandalf vibe, but only desertwalker’s cane shows while sheathed, which kinda sucks, there are some shield like things from WoD I believe, and potions and crystals esepcially from SL, but mostly its random useless stuff.

Yeah, it 100% doable. My favourite mage swords are obviously the Felo’melorn (but a bit too large for me), but I really like the one hand sword The Sunbreaker, sold by Eldara Dawnrunner (good belf look about it). Plenty of mogs you can use from Dragonflight that would fit that theme.

Dalaran employed Battle-mages, so they very much exist.
you can in fact “duel-wield” as a mage using certain off-hand items with a staff model and a sword in your main hand.
If you want the spellbreaker look, I would recommend the Blood elf heritage armor, as it was inspired by the spellbreakers from warcraft 3
In terms of lore, A battle-mage is perfectly fine, however spellbreakers were up until recently nearly extinct, but if I recall correctly they started taking in new recruits again.
