In-game Music: Ones to Love and Avoid!

For the 13ish years I’ve played WoW, I’ve always played with the music off because I found it too distracting. As I get older and through reading these forums, I realise that it’s clearly a part of the game that many players enjoy as it influences how they feel and interact with a zone. It’s an art form that I’ve never really appreciated before.

With that in mind: which zones would you recommend visiting for the best in-game soundtracks? Equally, what are your avoid/mutable music zones?

I like all zones ( music wise ) .It’s the best thing in this expansion .

The Tortollan music really annoys me.

Usually, most people mention the Storm Peaks, with which I strongly agree. Probably has the best music in the entire game. Grizzly Hills is also named a lot of times. I personally think Wintergrasp is underrated in terms of music, both the “normal” tracks and the battle variants.

Cataclysm has a lot of simple and peaceful tracks. Stonetalon Mountains, Winterspring, Feralas and the Arathi Highlands/Twilight Highlands come to mind. Obviously Mulgore as well. Darkshore is a bit controversial, many people prefer the original music, but there is a track called Ruins of Auberdine which I think is among the best.

As for Mists of Pandaria, you can’t go wrong. Pretty much all zones have music that are beautiful and fit the zone perfectly. A few themes I’d like to mention in particular - first and foremost, Serpent’s Heart. I think this is one of the pieces composed by Jeremy Soule, who did an amazing job at pretty much all the music he wrote for MoP. Shame this was the only expansion he worked on. The first part here of the Kun-Lai Summit music is also great. Beyond that, the music of the Timeless Isle is for many of us nostalgic, serene and equally beautiful.

I am not a big fan of Warlords of Draenor music. It’s loud and bombastic, and sometimes feels out of touch with WoW as a whole. Legion is below par, it has some music which is okay at best, but most of it is either recycled or uninspiring. Suramar has good music, and that’s as far as I dare to say anything positive about it.

Battle for Azeroth is better, but definitely not as good as the music once was. It’s thankfully not as loud as WoD and is of much higher quality than Legion. Zuldazar is really good. Tiragarde Sound is well done too, more specifically the Kul Tiras Sky Night tracks and the music you hear at the Waning Glacier: https://wow.zamimg.com/wowsounds/2144143.

What should you avoid? Not a lot, I usually turn music off at WoD/Legion content, but also Borean Tundra, Felwood and Silithus. I don’t know if they are bad per se, but I am just not a fan of them. I recommend keeping the music turned on most of the time.

Here’s some music which isn’t part of a zone but is either heard in Dungeons and Raids or not often heard in the world at all:
