Since 2 weeks i always ask before going to arena to go in voice ingame, and here what happen :
Winrate increasing
Way less toxicity
People donāt leave fast after 1 game
Better cooperation
My friend list is increasing fast
I think the in game voice is really something that people should adopt if they want to avoid toxicity.
The most feedback people fear is to do not speak english correctly : donāt be afraid to speak english, not everyone is born english, so itās ok if you are russian or french to do not speak 100% english in vocal !
It removes one layer of anonymity therefore it reduces the toxicity chance (yes, people canāt identify you from your voice, but hearing a personās voice is more personal than reading their words).
And itās a well established fact toxicity correlates with anonymity/assumptions of people being unable to identify you consistenly which leads to the idea of āno consequencesā regarding the behaviour.
We know this to be the case because the most rage filled nerds in PC gaming are some of the meekest people who wouldnāt say boo to a goose in a real-life situation, particularly if it looks like their ātargetā may lay them out.
itās entirely based upon the idea of:
They donāt know me
They have no way to visit consequences upon me
The whole thing is completely impersonal
There: it is not big deal if I am toxic to this person
Using your voice means it is no longer completely impersonal which means (small as it may be) it will reduce toxicity in PUGs.
Thereās also the absolute cringe that is actually hearing someone nerdrage. Itās one thing to read it but to hear someone who may well be a grown adult losing their crap over a video game and mouth off is justā¦well, itās one thing to do it at the screen, or with people who know you. But strangers? I doubt as many people are cool with that as they are a random reading their text as ātoxicā.
i agree with OP, RBG games iāve joined that mandate a voice chat tend to perform better and be way way less toxic and stick together for longer.
Iāve also never had a problem getting it to work. Each time iāve gone to use it it has worked perfectly. I must be inconsistent across users? Iāve certainly found it less clunky and arduous to setup that joining a specific discord channel for the purposes of voice chat. Anything that doesnāt require me to be outside the game to do it is a bonus in my books.
Since the big overhaul of the voice system itās been fine but weāre talking early days of voice comms in WoW vs now. Someone brought up TBC, I donāt think we got it working once in Wrath in our guild. However, itās very very different today from what it was then.
