I’m currently playing on Magtheridon EU which apparently is a High Pop realm, yet when I was standing in Stormwind and Kul Tiras, there could go 20 minutes + without a single message in trade or general chat. I also rarely see people from my own realm when out in the world. This is very weird, because Magtheridon was a high pop realm in mists of pandaria aswell, and back then you could see a message in the public channels every 1-2 mins atleast.
It could be high pop but 90%+ horde so as alliance it would seem empty to you.
I’m pretty sure that Magtheridon EU is a Alliance dominated realm
Realmpop says that it’s around 51% Horde to 49% Alliance, so roughly equal.
I think many people have turned off the public channels because of all the ads and trolling that is going on there.
Doubt enough to warrant the situation OP describes
Don’t trust realm pop too much, that said my realm (aerie peak) was balanced but it isn’t, it’s alliance dominated according to data from someone here and census plus.
I dunno what else it could be to be honest Mn, faction ratio would be the most obvious reason and it could have altered dramatically recently, the only true way to see that is to run census plus at peak time on an alliance character and a horde character and see what the numbers tell you.
@Mn: There is only very limited data on Magtheridon available… There are no runs on horde for the past 30 days, so can not directly see anything about it…
On alliance side, the very limited available stats go from 42 CCU at around 06 hours to 600+ CCU around 21 hours. So there is a HUGE difference between activity levels depending on time of day. Which is generally true of just about all single servers. A handful of tiny connected realms have a little bit less spread in absolute numbers, even though some of the do fluctuate between 3 (yes, three) during early morning and about 80+ at peak time (usually somewhere between 19:30 and 21:30 server time).
You also have to keep in mind that the population stats are NOT directly derived from activity. Very big servers have a relative high stat even if activity is really low. For example Silvermoon and Draenor basically can not drop below medium, even if they literally have a single person online just after a reboot.
In other words, Maghtheridon has a very big passive population that is partially reflected on its’ status. And the number of active varies a LOT between early morning and prime time peak. Based on the numbers on WCR, alliance side prime time peak on Magtheridon is about… 1400% above the early morning low.
EDIT: Deleted an excess “the”.
Servers like Silvermoon, Draenor etc have a larger capacity than some other servers. So where as Magtheridon is estimated to have around 200k chars, the one Draenor is more round the 500k mark.
Seems odd that trade and general are dead though.
@Punyelf: One minor clarification, if I may.
Server population differs wildly, but most of the time large or small populations as such are not a problem. Rather, excessive or minimal concurrent activity level is… and as far as I am aware, all servers currently technically max out at around 6 000 CCU. On servers that have massive passive populations (such as Draenor or Silvermoon), the CCU limit is hit rather easily (aka there are queues or AH/bank/vendor lag even if the CCUs are somewhat below 6 000).
As an example, Silvermoon has seen more than 50 000 different characters online within the past 30 days and prime time peak has been around 5 850 CCU. Draenor almost 63 000 in the past 30 days and prime time peak has been theoretically over 6 000 CCU. Those values are slightly vague, because the CensusPlus does not run quickly on large factions. In extreme cases run time for a full level spread (from 120s all the way down to 20s) can exceed an hour.
WCR records for Magtheridon are very limited. They are currently showing a hair below 5 000 (100% alliance) seen in the past 30 days, but that value is obviously way too low as there simply are not enough submissions to get a clear picture.
Data on tiny factions, when available, is often very accurate, because a small faction scan can finish in about 2 minutes, in extreme cases even less.
