Info and suggestions for Argent Archives?

So, while trying to search for a relevant topic I realised that the AA doesnt actually have a relevant thread with info on what it is, where it is, who runs it etc.

The reason for the topic primarily was to posit some suggestions; I know the AA isnt everyones cup of tea, and thats fine. But, at present, its also a little clunky to use for people who do want to use it; for instance, why the need for a new account per character? An old MMO I played had a similar ‘handbook’ site/wiki and never had any issues with multiple pages per account. If really wanted, Admin approval prior to posting could always be a thing?

Well I have a page per character depending if I really RP that character.

I get new ideas for characters and writing stories. So if I am confident I am going to use this AA page for ny character I create it and elaborate further on it. For me it’s like having a character sheet I can often go back and review. I also put information on my AA page that I don’t put on my TRP.

As someone who works professionaly with the same content management system that Argent Archives uses, it’s because the characters are the “user” pages in that system.

It’d potentially take a major overhaul to get something like multiple character pages per account working, and there’s no guarantee it wouldn’t break other features in the process (as tends to happen when you develop new features on an old system).

That said, I believe the staff-behind-the-scenes still takes suggestions for new features (or indeed things like requests to transfer guild ownership from one character to another) on the site e-mail: contact@argentarchives.org

Regarding the “who runs it”, they have an “about” page here: https://www.argentarchives.org/about, and I think our resident Starstone is still the day-to-day administrator for the site.

Hi Kaytlinne and everyone else interested in the Argent Archives.

The AA used to be mentioned in a sticky about role-playing on Argent Dawn, if I remember right, but that’s a long time ago (the site has also been around for quite some time, since April or May 2007). I (Starstone) was one of the people who initially put the site together (along with Alabast and Yara, who had the initial idea; they went on to do non-WoW things in the years since then).

A lot of things in how the site works (and the quirks that come with it) are from decisions we made back at the start. For example, one user = one character came from a desire (more common back then) to keep your alts secret from other people, and there are probably more. We’re still basically using the same software we built the site with back then (apart from patching and upgrading the underlying software and moving hosting services several times).

As Rogmasha noted, the character pages are actually “user” pages, which makes it hard to move away from that (while keeping what’s on the site working as intended).

We’ve considered rebuilding the site and moving to “something new” and more modern, while at the same time keeping the current Archives around (after all, why else would we be the Argent Archives  ). Upgrading or rebuilding isn’t simple or cheap, however. Right now, the current team doesn’t have the time or resources to do so.

Currently, there’s a small group of admins and moderators helping out to keep the site running, while I mostly take care of the technical stuff. While more help is always welcome, we’re careful with taking on new people. Do contact us if you want to write news articles, those are always welcome!

If you have any questions or ideas, feel free to drop that via mail at contact@argentarchives.org or through the contact form at https://www.argentarchives.org/contact.
