Interesting test for the frames stuttering problem, please try this

Firstly please don’t lock this or move it to the other thread which also includes various other issues, this might just help find the solution.

I’ve noticed a specific action that causes noticeable frame drops only when sound effects are enabled so please try this yourself and report if the result is the same, it might just help Blizzard debug their sound code.

To set up the test, go to Game menu/Options/Graphics and enable “Vertical Sync”. This makes the frame drop easier to see.
Now go to Game menu/Options/Audio and make sure “Enable Sound” and “Sound Effects” are ticked.

Now press CTRL-R to enable the FPS display down in the corner next to all the game option buttons. Most likely you’ll be locked at 60hz or 59.9hz as mine is.

Now move your mouse pointer over the “Specialization & Talents” button (3rd from the left) and click it on and off as fast as you can for 10 seconds. Did the FPS drop significantly? Mine drops to 53-57 FPS and sometimes even as low as 50 FPS.

Now go back to Game menu/Options/Audio and un-tick the “Sound effects” option to disable sound effects.

Now move your mouse pointer back over the “Specialization & Talents” buttons (3rd from left) and click it on and off as fast as you can for 10 seconds again. This time, with sound effects disabled, the FPS doesn’t drop for me but remains at 59.9hz. So in this example playing the sound effect when that screen opens and closes is causing a serious drop in FPS.

And the interesting thing is, none of the other option buttons down there cause this frames drop, it only happens with the “Specialization & Talents” button. Try it yourself, enable sound effects again and click every other button down there on and off as fast as you can to open and close all those other screens… no drop in FPS?

So assuming others can confirm this, the message to Blizzard is… go look at your sound playback on that “Specialization & Talents” button and check what’s different about it compared to all the other button sounds. Maybe that will help get to the source of this frame dropping with sounds effects enabled problem.

Thanks for reading and please respond with your results.

I have still some drops but it’s difference of over 20 FPS. With sounds it’s from 60 to 25-30 and without 60 to 50 but I have old GTX 960 OC and i5-4460.

That’s still an interesting results, thanks. A very significant difference in the frames drop I think is also a good indicator.

It’s funny that the same sound is even played when opening/closing your “Character Info” screen (first button on the left) , so it’s not the actual sound itself that’s causing the problem, it’s something in how that “Specialization & Talents” button is playing it back.

I’ve been testing it for a week. I turn sound off and see how it plays. I fly around areas that always make me stutter, see the stutters, turn sound off and redo it. Then I relog so the zones can’t be ‘loaded’ already and thats why they might stop stuttering but its always MUCH MUCH smoother when the audio is disabled. Like I’m flying around Valdrakken and its stuttering everytime it loads new people or npcs and stuff, but I turn the sound off and do the same and its just smooth. When I’m doing my WQs I turn my sound off and it’s noticeably improved. I had just upgraded my PC for DF: I got an i9-13900KF, new motherboard to run it, new SSD with wifi something or other, 32 gig ram, gtx 3070 I kept since its already good. All drivers updated, nothing running in the background etc etc. Raids and crowded areas run well after the stuttering stops and if I don’t move around.

Please do the above test and post your results… FPS when clicking on/off the “Specialization & Talents” button with sound effects switched on and again switched off.

If we get enough people reporting the crazy frame drop there it might highlight the source of this stuttering problem.

We all know that to put it simply, the game is in trouble right now. broken. We don’t know exactly why the problem is the sounds or the graphics, why? because we are not engineers. We are paying customers playing the game. but the fact that a problem that has existed since the pre-patch release is still not resolved and the exact reason cannot be found, in my opinion, should be a shame. Advertisements of the game are made continuously, 30 days of free game time are given. mounts are exhibited in the shop. The road map is shown to us. explains what to do. but this problem is still not solved. I can’t really enjoy playing right now. It feels like my computer is broken. an annoying situation. I have no problems with any other game. but it’s pathetic that the engineers and programmers of the game that I want to play and that I pay money for every month still can’t fix the game they made. Class balance settings are being made, hotfixes are coming, they are making quests, etc. bugs, but we are still waiting for this problem. If I want to quit the game now, I don’t because I want to play. but no solution 1 step no progress. For example, it is very interesting that even nvidia has not released a game ready driver? Is the problem money? Is that the deal they made with amd? I don’t know. But now I’m starting to feel nauseous.

SİMPLY GAME İS BROKEN…

With the talent window, I only get a frame drop the first time I open it. I stay at 60 when I spam it like you ask.

Thanks. Yes it’s worse for me the first time I open the window too, drops to around 45 that first time.

Does disabling sound effects (or all sound) stop the general stuttering for you or as some have reported does it make no difference?

Disabling sound doesn’t stop the drop when I open the talents. But general game play disabling sound ingame makes a big improvement.
