Is Coldtusk soloable as fire mage at level?

Fire mage. Level 92.
I get this little challenge to slay Coldtusk while rescuing Olin Umberhide near the Garrison. The boar is protected by 10-20 wolves and 10-30 of those spiny insects. The wolves call for help when at 50% health.

Face on, seems impossible. Creatures respawn so quickly all around him. By the time I clear the pulling area (5-8 adds), first one is back.

Hiding in a corner, I had 2 adds by the time Coldtusk was 50% health. Not sure where they came from. Needless to say I died in 5 seconds thereafter, despite shields. Could have been the Mirror Images, but I can’t face tank the boar either.

Am I suckus extraordinairicus or are some rares in Draenor really, really hard? I know I can come back at 110 and sneeze at them, that isn’t the question. Or maybe, as per past experience, is the fire mage epicus glassicus (dungeon-exclusive spec by intention)?

Just curious, really. Sub expires in 40 minutes and mostly playing classic. I just don’t remember to ever having a problem with this 2nd welcome rare.

ps.: Fireball hit 478 in 2.0 seconds, boss hp 40786 => 80 seconds fight except for crits. (Scorch 143 in 1.4 seconds.)

Mages especially have had issues in WoD content ever since the content-scaling  unless you can out-kite them, My best suggestion would be to wait till you are 11 levels over the content.

Hm, I see, thanks.
So basically I have to be careful and humble when picking my challenges. Okay

I guess… as a mage :woman_shrugging: Otherwise why not try to find a buddy to do it with?

Or change to frost just for this particular fight, also Arcane has slow as pvp talent if i recall correctly, you may try. There are always specs good with soloing and glass cannons like fire mages.

Thanks for all inputs.

Fair question.
Only a single one playing modern WoW but I could definitely use General chat or something.

Guess I might need to learn those specialisations, too. Thanks for the hint.

I have had this idea about my characters having a choice in their lives about their specialisation. Kind of a roleplaying aspect.

While everyone is talking about Fire and how good it is, i still remember how good frost is with his mechanics, and how fast i could burst some harder mobs with him without taking any damage. Just try yourself

I can always log my horde char and help you if needed but i will not be online for another 2 hours.
As Mim correctly pointed out scaleing in 7.3.5 made life hell for clothies so you do not suck.

Hm. Sound similar to Classic, frost for control during questing and fire for blow up glass.

Very kind of you
My game time just expired for now. I was mostly looking for input regarding how I should approach it all. I definitely have to relearn / improve, just how much and where is the ceiling. Thanks!

Frost is very powerful, trust me plus his op CC you can’t lose with him. Fire is just better at top gear levels in m+ and raid, but frost is worth considering

Edit: Easy to learn, not hard to master also, and can crit for 200k +

Gear is a HUGE deal at the start of Draenor.

Scaling against gear is way out of whack there - frankly bugged.

I took a mage through for a test. Here’s one ofmy posts about it:

OK, I think I’ve got to the bottom of a major part of this, at least in early Draenor, though there may also be specific mistuned spots elsewhere.

It’s all about gear.

I am testing 3 sets:

  1. A Questing set, containing only items I get from questing, plus some 372 Pandaria Greens from vendors to fill in the spots where I didn’t keep any. Ilevel 421 at 91.

  2. A Looms set, with standard Looms, and quest gear to fill in the other slots. Ilevel 486 at 91.

  3. A Godmode set, with a crafted 630 staff, and the best AH cheap pieces I can find, a few hundred gold’s worth, to fill in the non-Loom slots. Ilevel 532 at 91.

The difference is amazing. It’s three different games. With the Godmode set, I glide through the world fearing nothing. With the Looms set, it’s much the same, maybe not quite as smooth, and I need to avoid doing anything silly, or biting off too much. With the Quest set, everything is a struggle, and the hard bits are very tough, and I can see how they would be impossible for a beginner. I’m not a great player, and I’m not a natural Fire Mage, but I’m not a beginner either, and if I’m struggling to get through things, a beginner would have no hope.

I take Groog as a good example. You need to kill Groog for one of the early quests in your Horde garrison. At 91, Groog a 93 Ogre with 407K HP. To get to Groog, you have to kill some mobs on the way and clear at least one of them near him. Those mobs were OK but slow with the questing set. Groog himself has two mechanics: a frontal zone, which you have to avoid, and he confuses himself, which gives you a few seconds to avoid or recover or heal. Now, here’s what happened when I took on Groog with the three gear sets:

Godmode set: Melted him in 25 seconds while sipping Barolo with my other hand. 15584 DPS.

Looms set: Good fight. Had to kite and avoid a bit. 78 sec. 5137 DPS. Finished at 70% HP but in good shape. Still had my Loom Neck heal, my Barrier was up, and I hadn’t even used my Void Trink.

Quest set: Oh my God I hope I don’t die and have to start this all over again. Please don’t let me die. 157 sec. 2550 DPS. Finished at 5% HP. Kiting and Blinking and throwing Images for all I was worth, just to stay alive.

It is cruel and unusual to send a beginner in that gear up against Groog. I really think he was the first mob I’ve met in questing that had a mechanic that needed to be watched for. Heckuva learning curve you got there.

So what’s the lesson? The standard evolution of your character sends you into Draenor undergeared, and the starting scenario fills only 5 slots, WHICH IS NOT ENOUGH, given how likely it is that you haven’t picked up enough gear in Pandaria, because you don’t need to do enough quests to fill every slot in the last three levels.
