I was thinking of leveling a dark iron and speccin into fire, but I keep hearing how it’s horrible in comparison to lightning. Generally, what was/is the strength of fire, more aoe or st oriented?

Its sort of alive only in PvP (or so I heard, I don’t do PvP). And in PvE its performance is so low compared to lightning its not even a thing.
What is 100% dead is the S3/S4 of DF lava burst spam build where you literally only cast that. So even if you decide to spec to the underdog build, you still cast lightning as filler.

Atm moment it’s not but it looks bad on PTR. So if you are PvP Elemental enjoy it as long as you can. It’s not about spamming instants but you have a go every 30 sec with Primordial + Ancestral Swiftness and a big one with Ascendance + Spiritwalker’s Grace.
The issue with it in 11.0.5 is that Lava Eruption Flame Shock consuming talent has a weird interaction with Ancestors. Their Lava Bursts also consume Flame Shock and no matter what you press (Earth Shock, Frost Shock, Lightning Bolt) they also cast Lava Burst. Before you finish your burst it’s already expired on the main target. If they fix this. It’s already acceptable. With some tuning it might be ok. The issue is that the damage isn’t there on PTR.
