Is general chat always silent now?

I am a returning player and it surprised me that no one ever uses general chat anymore, I only see the occasional gold seller advertising. Asked two questions and both went unanswered, for the past week I don´t think I have seen any banter. This is both good and bad.

I probably won´t be staying as the only class I love playing is the MM hunter and about to lose the pet, I love my pet, so, my days are numbered. Still curious about the general chat though if anyone can answer that.

I honestly couldn’t tell you. I hardly ever look at the chat window except for group or whispers.

General chat is very rarely used. Most people either do their socializing using 3rd party voice apps.

General chat has almost entirely lost its purpose, if one needed it for socialising the time of durotar chat and so on are sadly gone. Also if one needed it for asking questions, it is more easier to open Google these days and look for the information themselves than ask chat and wait random not always accurate or trustworthy answers.

blizzard gutted the social part of the game

they went heavy into “guild social” and community socials
but forgot that layering and phasing and boosters ruined the server social chat

its a shame i miss , Barrens chat . /trade chat late at night

  • Game’s population and activity is way down. Currently even worse due to the Xmas break/New Year malaise.
  • Very new players don’t really understand how the chat system/channels function.
  • The ‘services’ channel floods chat windows with nonsense. (Blizzard should disable this by default)
  • Back to new the players, they don’t know how to turn off bad channels.
  • Older players are too scared to engage in banter because people are too easily offended these days and you can be banned by random chat watchers for petty reasons. (Bigger issue in the US than EU)
  • The game is boring it doesn’t engage players enough for them to care to chat.

Join LookingForGroup as it is somewhat of a global / world chat.
Still dead silent most of the time.

This - Barrens Chat was funny as hell back in the day

And when someone says something it’s in the wrong faction language.
Time to remove that imo since Horde and Alliance are friends now.

General chat in cities useless since its only connected to the city itself.

Trade is used by traders advertise profession, and its connected to all city hubs.

Service where the aids going, selling baited runs, bots trying to outbid each others 0-24, highly recommend to turn it off.

chat is silent because people will report you for whatever and then you can get silence and people don’t want that.

honestly trade chat and service channel should be deleted

let us talk to each other !

Cant blame chat for being quiet when even having a normal convo in general chat is dangerous these days. You never know who will get offended and decide to report.

^^ This.

The only “Public” channel I even have on view anymore is /2 (trade) to earn some easy gold if I happen to be in the city and someone wants something crafted. I have my guild, we have our chat and discord, that´s more than social enough for me. I miss teh days of having lively banter in /1, but when the very posts that lead to that banter generally lead to a silence, it starts to die. Ergo it´s been on life support at best vor many , many years at this point.

Ppl get actioned in the game for chat so they get fed up from using it I would imagine

@ Op

People stopped using in game chat because you can be easily get silenced/ ban for nothing

Better choice is to use discord, just for chatting normally like IRL.

Like some said while ago that sometimes it can seem like harshest penalty for something very minor. People literally get permad for chat cause its cumulative so it dont really matter how severe the language is or not. I also think its best not use chat at all at this point.

The in game moderation is actually same as :

The next step they will replace all npc venfor food and mage food by “pizza hut”

I guess the oldschool players are enjoying Classic Anniversary now.
Usually it only takes someone to tell a couple jokes or ask about some stuff.

Most global interactions have been systemized (in my opinion, for the better, LFG chat was insane) and many people just immerse when questing.

Now it’s less but in the first few weeks, people were talking while assembling party chats, where are you from and stuff like that.
