So the thing is, I plan to learn german, i’m only starting and I thought would be nice to be exposed to it more and started to lvl a character on a german realm and play there.
I can see how this can backfire, but does this seem like a reasonable idea and it’s totally dumb ?
It’s a great idea! Immersing yourself in another language is the best way to learn it, and WOW works well enough for that purpose. In fact, that’s how I learned English back in the day 
It will be difficult at first if you don’t speak the language at all, but if you’re actually learning (and not just perpetually “planning to learn”) you could understand a fair bit within just a few months.
However, it’s probably best to have a backup plan, such as making sure you know people who’d be willing to speak English with you when needed. This will come in handy when things go awry and you’re feeling out of your depth.
We have a couple of French guys trying to learn German on my server (Celebras). In the beginnig, some people thought they were bots or whatever and were rude, but about everybody knows them by now and think it is great. We are a rp-server and most people don’t like other languages in open channels. I would definately recommend you try it. On most servers, you will understand a lot anyway, like “lfm heal”. Try to speak German right from the beginning. This way you learn!
Oh the amount of times I’ve told this to my knucklehead students only for them to ignore this. They drive me crazy.
yes its a good idea because you will constantly google certain words to get out a full sentence, responding to someone until the point where you memorize structures / words and other stuff.
That said… there is still words people are not able to use correctly such as than and then in english…

Also: You could go here and ask your question in German - for practice. 
It’s not dumb at all, people in less developed countries use the radio, usually the BBC World Service to learn English.
I used to watch German children’s programs to practice German.
