depends what spec you are and can go for Spellstrike stuff as arcane missles mage aswell as fire
If you have a guild that want to carry your greengeared mage then you dont need it. If you on the other hand do not have a guild that want to do that then you still should get the tailoring stuff.
One would indeed think that, would he not? Alas… 
Plenty of ways to make money- any of the gathering professions will help your gold balance too.
Just work out what is relatively easy to farm yet not surrounded by bots and you can profit.
Even working on my Consortium rep the slow way makes a reasonable amount per hour…
