Is Mage good choice ?

Ello I never played a Mage, I was always main a melee class so I wanna ask.

Is mage good choice for long run ? (cca for 3 expansions)
Is good for PvP ? I know we have meleecraft but still.
Is fun in BfA ?

Thx, all for your time.

Welcome to the mage forums, Veneryen!

To answer your first question, there should be always at least one mage spec that remains decent in the end-game content, so you should be fine when rolling a mage long-term. It’s a fun class also (not Frost though, leave out this “press whatever shines” borefest). Fire’s of course the most fun spec!

To answer your question whether it’s good in PvP… with a proper setup of gear, fire can currently 1-shot people. So I’d say it’s pretty strong? I don’t know how to PvP at all and got up to 1.8 rating, so it must be somewhat decent.

@Coldshade What do you think of frost mages ?

My general suggestion. If you want a range character that’s good in pvp and pve, you might want to go for characters like druids or priests.

With the upcoming changes, mages are going to become weaker in general. Specially frost.

You can go hunter too. They’re currently doing great.

But if you don’t care about the near future of mages, since you know each class will have its ups and downs eventually, Then go for mage. It’s a decent class overall.

Yes always
…

Yes.

To put it simply, mage is the best.
I hit 120 last night but I’ve been playing on and off since launch, why did it take so long? Because I was trying other classes.
Rogue.
Paladin.
Warrior. DK. Shaman. Warlock.

None of that kept my interest despite wanting change, so I came back to my mage and it’s just a lot more enjoyable. Fire in BGs is really fun right now too.

PVE wise, fire is good with blaster master, rest is untested or cant come close to this.

PVP wise frost is being hit hard next expansion and fire is all about one shotting someone through using cds and if you failed, you either wait for your cd to come back which is 2 min or its game over for you.

Arcane can be found in the recycle bin in your desktop.

I would say no, it is the least fun class to level for me. Just to explain where I coming from. I have leveled every class to 120 and working on mage now as the last one. Out of all classes the mage is the biggest pain in PVE ( all my gripes are regarding PVE as that is what I play )

Comparing to other classes Mage:

  • Dies if you get unexpected 3rd mob ( like backing up and agro something )
  • Any elite / quest boss that is easily killed by any other class ( even priest  ) take all your cool downs to kill
  • As frost mage the slowing down mobs is pointless, almost all have some kind of blink, charge to get to you in second and after few freezes they seems to get resistant to it, also the mele reach is huge… so you freeze the mob, and have to move back and before you cast second spell mob is on to you and you getting dmg
  • the Ice Barrier is so weak, two or three hits from one mob and its gone, 3 mobs ? its like you did not have it
  • Blink/Shimmer works only on level ground ( imagine the scene from Rick and Morty, where rick demonstrate true level for Morty  ) any small bump will stop you in your tracks
  • The pet water elemental is not doing much, but the one extra frost nova is not bad, but as mentioned it stop working on the mob after 3rd I think ( at least it looks like it to me )
  • You have survived somehow 3 or 4 mobs = stop and eat/drink

And the old good one, “if you getting hit you doing it wrong” if BS due to reasons above, you will get hit no matter what even with two blink charge… maybe not one on one, but how many times you fight one mob ? You gonna face two mostly. The absence of quick self heal ( like every other class have ) is slowing you down extremely.

Maybe at 120, with 360ilvl + gear you can have fun finally ?

*EDIT: I have switched to fire now, and its more fun and things die faster at level 117 ( it wasn’t like that at 110 ) so fire might be the way to go for pve leveling

Mage is historically one of the safest classes in the game, it’s extremely rare that we do not have at least one strong spec. If you’re willing to be omni-spec, look no further than Mage for a ranged class, but if you’re wanting to strictly to stick to a single-spec (which why would you do this?) just play Affliction instead, they always seem to be strong.

I don’t PvP.

It’s one of the better-feeling classes in BFA. It mostly stings if you compare it to Legion Mage (particularly Fire) but it still feels great in it’s own right.
