I have a 484 demolock and 484 frost mage. I only play mythics. When i play my mage i get so shamed and frustrated. i dont even wanna join other peoples keys. My rating is decent 2880(pug my keys) for frost i returned to wow in late S3.
Why im almoust always the worst dps? is this meant to be? when i play on my warlock i often invite mages to compare them to my performance and the results are similar. Many are better than me but still. Last night when i pugged Eb 21 the mage even apologied for being bad, but i felt his pain. Quite often i do pretty decent even topping some boss fight like dht bosses, expect the dragon. But most often the overall is sad looking.
AoE is frustrating in pugs. Its hellish to try aoe moving train with small area effects, blizzard, frozen orb(!) and comet storm. I feel mistakes are heavily punished. i try to nail comet storm, orb, blizzard, coc → combos but it doesnt seem to yield result. i shatter cleave glacial spikes with ice nova and frost nova. I just feel running around to melee and trying to survive. I do noticeable higher dps to raid dummy than my demonlogy and i dont even use bl, when mages can use it twice as much than others. But in mytrhics i feel squishy i survive very good but i always feel fragile and nervous. i have to react fast or die easily. i have cooldowns to survive big mechanics. 1 thing i learned from my data and other mages that we always are the one who take the least ammount of damage and healing or the second best. becouse we have to be active. demonlogy can just tunnel and take it easier.
Becouse mages are the best dps spec with bloodlust(bm and shamans are not close to mages) and have very good utility like mass barrier and cc are people expecting our dps being lower than most other specs? I follow youtubre mythics comps and mage is in high lvl keys but always the lowest dps.
it just feel bad my mage have over 40 timed 20+ runs but my lock is damaging so much more and is alot easier to play. aoe is no brainer, no setup, i can match ret pally in aoe and in st totally dominate. with mage im always in panic mode, cursing and shaming myself. i dont ask others to play again with me, im just happy they dont hurt my feelings lol. Ofc sometimes i do better not always last dps depending on the comp and i take very little unavaoidable dmg, help with mass barrier and now in spiteful week its fun how others run to me to cc the spirits.
I think it is harder to get competitive DPS out of a Mage, but rewarding when it does happen. It’s frustrating that I can play Ret and easily out DPS my Mage with far less thinking required. Still, fun utility and portals stop me swapping to Warlock…
Some people seem to think that mage is supposed to be low dps, sadly they also seem to be the ones working at blizzard.
No other real excuse for the joke talent trees that offer no real incentive to go with alternative builds that do worse dps or talents that might as well be dead on arrival because no one will ever use them.
Im actually convinced they did the rework just to force lots of mages to start playing with living bomb.
p.s. I am kind of convinced at this point that even if they let fire mages use every single talent in the entire fire tree, the dps difference would only be a few k if even that.
For frost, in raids we are competitive…when things go to plan. Slip ups and bad luck (you get the bomb or swirly) and your damage suffers greatly. Some might say we are disproportionately punished and there is some truth in that.
Some people would point to wow progress charts or similar and say, mages are fine which they are… as they are looking at mythic 95%+ parses.(Stop looking at those!) Put the settings to say heroic and 60% (or less) and you’ll get a more accurate indication of the general experience. You see what classes ‘drop-off’ the most and which encounter types affect us most.
As for M+ a great deal is tank dependant, if they think its MDI and pull loads, the palas, Monks, DH and BM hunters will make you look a bit of a tool. Moving the deathball out of your AoEs will trash your numbers too.
Some affixes affect casters more than melee…because they can move while doing all of their rotation. Volcanos, tornados while casting spikes are ill advised so you have to work aroung them and so you are suboptimal straight away there (just an example but you get the idea).
Playing whith groups you know will help a lot. The healer will likely be aware that you can deal with the big hits but you melt to continous dot style damage as you have no real self heals…
If it gets too much put your mage on the back burner and take your frustrations out on your keyboard by playing one of the previously mentioned classes… or your lock.
I know what u r writing. Same for Fm. And next update again survival, balance druid, windwalker get huge buff. And FM get only *Added an activation overlay for Fury of the Sun King. :D:D we have weakaura blizz cmon. * Aberrus, the Shadowed Crucible (2) Set Bonus: Charring Embers now increases damage taken by 6% (was 5%) and lasts 2 additional seconds. :D:D what a troll buff … lets get back for mage Incanter’s Flow 20% . And living bomb increase about 800%
It was tier set tuning for everyone, barely any actual buffs or nerfs. Class tuning will laikely happen a few weeks into the patch. Also incanters flow is a bad passive that makes you damage unpredictable and is not worth playing around. Don’t ask for buffs on that.
there are more option - for example same living bomb not only in PVP. Or remove Unleashed Inferno and get him together with normal Combustion. Pointless split this. Or 4 fire blast same like in the Legion. Or increase crit chace for fireball … everything depend of blizz
It was mostly learn to play issue. Also pug tank/healer matter alot. I optimized my gear from 33% to 29%crit and 36% haste to 34% and got versatily instead. I optimized the rotation; new mindset. Using frozen orb+blizzard+comet storm+ coc and using procced ice lance and gs much as possible. The frozen orb+blizzard is not mostly about damage but feeding fingers of frost and ice lances for glacial spike icicle build up synenergy. Couple of 1billion dmg runs on aoe target dummys, the rotation is now corrected in my muscle memory. Always casting and know what to do.
Its very rewarding to play, out of 3 specs i play demonlogy, destro and frost is now my favorite. Aoe and single target damage both are really high. Now i often top meters/ or atleast be on the same page as others. Quite often i pull huge boss dps i did 29million damage on wayvrest manor last boss while shadow priest and ret both did 20million.
And when playing own keys dont get 2 melees and you, rather frost mage and shadow oriest/other ranged. Thats how you are not alone targeted by ranged mechanics. I had bad habbit of getting 2 melees before. Much smoother with 2-3 ranged
Yes. Keep in mind that most guides is written by tryhards for tryhards, which means they automatically assuming near perfect conditions for you. For example when you sim your char, you always has all the buffs which is ofc unrealistic. Or when you look at high-key mages who does lot of damage, you will notice that whole groups plays the key very different as to compare to your humble 18-20 pugs. Also check the raid mythic logs - lots of rets and rogues there, with arcane and frost is somewhere in to 8-10, meaning - even with perfect performance from your against Rets or Rogues who will do perfect too, you still come out lower. It all it tuning - in BFA, NOTHING could beat fire, with Font and bracers and heart fire would pop up on pull harder than next 3 dps - combine. This expac they tune it a little bit lower. My suggestion - stop carrying so much over nothing and measure yourself against performance level of no-life losers who never touched grass ), left alone the other gender, and just have fun playing your spec. Even with tuning stuck against us - if you do well, but ret/rogue/dh is bad - your still win dps race.
