So I’ve gotten back to WoW after a I skipped a couple of expansions and have been getting into tanking again, I used to enjoy it a lot, but somehow this time around it seems like I’m mostly frustrated.
First of all dungeons seem to be focused on trash mobs rather than bosses, they are much harder than bosses and not even remotely fun, second I need to remember every combo, every path pertaining to said combo of affixes for each week, which mobs to kite, which to avoid and so on, and it changes every week. Idk… it doesn’t seem reasonable at all.
And why focus the dungeons on the mobs rather than bosses? Bosses are fun but all the affixes are just frustrating, it really gets old after a while, it’s just constant stress that you have run away from the ghosts or jump around to avoid vortexes while fighting in a super narrow corridor etc. Idk, maybe it’s just me, and everyone else is having a blast, but honestly I start getting anxious whenever I play my warrior, because on top of all the frustration coming from the mobs’ needlessly frustrating abilities (I do not see the fun in them) that constantly change, I also got abused for not knowing exactly what and how to do at each and every corner of the dungeon. How does everyone remember every little detail ? I just don’t think it’s reasonable to expect all this stuff of tanks. We’re in this to have fun as well, once it starts getting frustrating its no longer fun.
How are other tanks perceiving this? Are my complaints unjustified?
Probably because we’ve been running the same 8 dungeons for over a year now. If u do m+ on a regular basis u’ll also end up knowing the dungeons by heart.
Maybe m+ tanking isnt your thing? Try it as dps instead? Then u can try tanking again when u are more familiar with the dungeons.
I’m taking a break from M+ now until 9.2 but I understand some of the frustrations you have. Coming back into M+ mid expansion is not great for a tank as you are expected to know routes, skips, pull sizes, etc. On top of that trash mobs are brutal on fortified weeks so you need to kite more than you’re used to. Some of the new affixes they put into the game are straight up frustrating, especially storming. As a tank you do not actually have to run away from the ghosts as they only target dps or healer
Except for a few frustrating affix combinations I find it more interesting to deal with more stuff in the long run. It’s just that the barrier of entry is really high for tanks if you don’t know the dungeons or general strategies. Best advice is to make some friends and maybe start on lower difficulty, or play as dps first and take note of what the tank is doing.
Agreed, these affixes are not fun, they’re just meant to make the dungeon harder, which I understand but, it’s also making it frustrating to play. A challenge is welcome, but I think the devs should find a different way to make dungeons more challenging, this is just endless frustration and not fun at all.
I totally agree. I came back to WoW after 10 years and started M+ on 9.1. I play M+ either as tank or healer, but mostly healer(holy paladin),because I just follow and heal.
Sometimes I like it , sometimes I don’t and the affixes are to blame for that.
For example I healed this week a +10 and +13 Sanguine Depths and it was very frustrating and exhausting due to Storming affix.
In the past few weeks I did a DoS necrotic sanguine for the first time as a prot warrior and it too was exhausting but rewarding at the end.
So I suggest maybe skipping weeks with affixes that you hate or at least run one key and taking it up slowly and ignore the whiners in your pug.
Hopefully double leggos in 9.2 will make the game more interesting,
If I can give you one advice: stop pugging. M+ is infinitely more enjoyable when you run with people you know and can trust and rely on. Find and join an M+ community, add people to your friend list, and ask them for keys. Build a network. Keying will become a whole new level of fun.
When you play 8 dungeons for a year? all the time same way you will remember every MOB
every strat every path
and then you QUIT because it will melt you brain how stupid that is
This happend when Blizz desired to stop pulling of big groups of mobs. They lowered threat on tanks, mobs that have too much abilities, affixes totally out of whack, and targetcap (that they later kinda reverted). All resulting in meta-classes, and anger when things fails, as it does more now then before.
For me it killed a lot of what made M+ fun, but guess some people like it.
Prepare for the dungeon key using mythictrap or other resources
get a MDT route, bind a hotkey to map, and write big text at checkpoints (68.6% before going up with angels after 2nd boss necrotic wake etc).
rewards comes next season when you’ve learned the dungeons depending if you nolife it or not
I tanked Season 1 to KSM, no biggie, but I remember how long it took me as I only played like 7-8 hours a week with my 2 friends.
So much details, but the only advice I can give is to only do your own key, do it at low level and focus on learning rather than gearing.
Before you start the key, take note and prepare for what you wanna try and remember. Set up your littlewigs for custom sound that helps you remember if that helps, and try to figure out where you might wanna pull bigger than one pack.
I remember I renamed every dangerous mob to something I could recognize in plater
It’s not that bad if you overgear the dungeon. But if you try and push your chars limit AND your skills at the same time, you might just get exhausted and anxious. Use the end of this season to simple learn the dungeons, the payoff will come fast in season 3 (9.2).
Run at lower key levels so you learn the routes and the dungeons. Jumping into bigger keys with everyone having the expectation that you know what to do is a bad idea, and they will have that expectation because the dungeons have been out for a long time. There is definitely a learning curve there, but most tanks enjoy m+ tanking precisely because of the challenge. Raid tanking is typically very uninspiring in contrast, and most of the time extremely easy.
M+ is fun and tbh easy until a certain level as a tank m+ is far more enjoyable with a good group tbh, the affixes aren’t that bad as most of the players say they are. The most people that complain are people that never go higher then +10 or people that well doesn’t want to think how to counter an affix.
