Already hit exalted thanks to TW buffs, but the plot farming just started. Are there any rewards in making the members best friend and grinding their trust or can I just drop it all?

Only 2 have anything of interest:
Sho sends you a red cricket pet and Hillpaw a straw hat (so hot right now) as best friends, but other than that just ignore everything else? No hidden secret quest chain that unlocks something more?

Apart from it just being something to do, more relevant when MOP was the current expansion.
There are some achievements to get. There may be some recipes etc (not worth unlocking outside of the completionaist aspect).
The farm can be used to grow almost any creafting reagents from that expansion so you can do all your professions or create some transmog items.
Also some achievements for growing particular things.
It’s a game, these features were mostly just things to do. Something the game doesn’t do so well in recent patches.
There is a mindset that everything has to be providing power (usually gear) to be worth doing. This wasn’t always the case.

and this is why I find DF so bland. It’s missing the small things that made a huge difference.
