I’ve played numerous MMO’s (TERA, AION, BDO, Blade and Soul, Final Fantasy) and WoW was always incomparably better for me. :\
There is always something lacking that WoW just does much better.

Unfortunately WoW is the biggest one which means they don’t have to try which results in products like Battle for Azeroth.
For me it still is the best mmorpg out there.
I tried ESO, but character creation was already disappointing and the gameplay didn’t really click with me.
Tried FF and the graphics are too straining on my eyes + characters kinda look the same just with different ears (cat ears, bunny ears, dragon horns(?)) and I never really got into the story.
I play SWTOR and GW2 from time to time - SWTOR more often and I enjoy them, but that’s just when I want a little change and never for long.
FFXIV has been streets ahead for two expansions now, honestly.
I feel like a lot of people still play WoW only because it’s familiar, or because they’re hoping it’ll become fun again.
I’m not so sure
https://ffxivcensus.com/
The census of FFXIV active characters puts it at just over 600k.
Just a guess obviously but I’m not sure WoW has ever dipped that low comparatively.
ShadowBringers was a great expansion, definitely, but it suffers with more drop-off than WoW does. After the first few months people just stopped logging in because after clearing Hades EX there is very little to do for the average player.
The devs even say they want people to play other games - the release schedule and general daily activities in FFXIV lend itself to this - if you’ve leveled all your jobs, done your BLU and cleared the current EX there really isn’t much to do outside of RP. Then repeat for 45 mins per week.
Until they add in a Eureka grind (which a large portion of the player base hated with a passion) for a weapon that’s useless when you get it at the end of the xpac. Personally I like Eureka but I like a mindless grind at selected times.
WoW is properly sketchy at the moment but it has so much more to do the FFXIV currently.
For me it is. Last eso expansion chapter was a storyline that lasted 2 hours and cost as much as bfa
That’s ESO for you.
Their expansion last 2-3 hrs max. But if you do all the side quest then it might reach 6 hrs.
Well, ppl mostly buy those expansion due to new gear sets that they get from dungeon or raids. So, that they can be ahead of the curve on world PvP.
Gear is so boring in eso with the 160cp imo…
The funny part is not that, the Devs of ESO have an habbit of overhauling the gear abilities and class skills by either nerfing them to the oblivion or overpowering them like the gods by every 3 months .
So, you have to go grind those gears again and again
For me personally, WoW has almost never had an equal. When Guild Wars 2 launched i played the living heck out of that, because the combat was so similar to WoW in the tab targeting and cooldown based way but the small ability pool and endgame that didnt reward time investment made it boring real quick.
Aside from Guild Wars there has never really been a true competitor to WoW for me, Final Fantasy just feels hollow, it has dime a dozen JRPG graphic and i would feel 0 connection to my character class since everyone can just talk to a dude and change they class at a moments notice.
I don’t know about ESO but from what i’ve heard, people say it feels more like Single Player RPG like Skyrim or Oblivion with players running around. Wich, if i wanted that, i would just play Skyrim and try to immerse myself in that world rather than have a half-n-half of an MMORPG and a Single Player story driven RPG
For me, it simply has to be. Even though a lot of the content WoW releases these days is tedious and uninteresting, there’s still a small subset of content that no other MMO can match.
My class feels fantastic and responsive, it’s absolute chaos under cooldowns and even with a small toolkit there are various ways to play, even if by default we just opt for “the best way”. While their acquisition and balance is awful, Essences and Azerite Traits add to this and help round out a class.
Mythic+ is the best system WoW has ever added, and is pretty much the only reason I’m still subscribed to the game. I need small-scale content that is as difficult as me and my friends are able to manage, which doesn’t hold the same commitment as “you must log in every Tuesday and Thursday for 4 hours” as raiding holds. It’s a replacement to raiding, something I’ve struggled to entertain ever since my guild fell apart in Wrath when I decided to skip a raid. Until another MMO adds a system similar, I can’t see me playing them.
And while it may shock most, WQs are a great system and solve a lot of the “content for every player”. Unfortunately, Blizzard leans on them far too much, but that’s another discussion entirely.
Short answer: No
Long answer: FFXIV now dominates as king of mmorpgs, WoW and ESO are competing for n2, GW2 and Black Desert at third, and so on…

Trust me, eso is not that great.
There are many problems with it, and zos seemingly isn’t willing to solve them, lag, nerfs everywhere, refusal to do anything aside the bare minimum will kill that game.
Especially the third point, because eso has the framework, but it needs work.
She is back for another episode of desperate housewives.
ESO, FF while fine… I can’t play them without thinking I’m getting a watered down version from the original RPG’s they spawn off. Warcraft never had that feeling for me due to it coming from an RTS which is limited in its world building compared to an RPG.
Was even less a problem with the older MMO’s since they were usually ‘unique’ IP’s.
People play what they know, which is why WoW is probably the most popular. Notice I don’t say the best, as that is subjective.
MMORPGs are all very similar, I know this will annoy some people but they are, they are just based in different worlds. You have 3 types of character Melee, magic ranged and physical ranged, then the three raider types, tank, healer and DPS with the occasional extra one, support.
They have similar quests, got fetch X amount of an item on the ground, Go kill X amount of mobs, get X amount of items from X mobs or go collect an item from X NPC. There are occasionally others but they are the vast majority.
Ive tried so many mmos and get burnt out on wow every expansion, but its always the one that has the best pvp and best combat
have you even tried ESO combat, the core gameplay just sucks so hard, animation cancelling and stuff just feels so bad
pretty much agree with everything youve said here, FF really is just plastic looking, and the combat doesnt compare to wow
wow is really the most polished game and there arent other mmos like it
I really hope Riot makes an MMO but i dont think thats their thing
‘Best’ is highly subjective and can also mean a multitude of things.
Is WoW the best at getting people to subscribe ? It’s certainly one of the best there.
Is WoW the best graphically ? That’s highly subjective.
Is WoW the best for story and lore. Definitely not, LotRO takes that crown by a country mile.
Is WoW the best for crafting ? Hahahahaha.
Is WoW the best for innovation ? No, there’s very little in WoW that’s totally original. (BG’s and flying are the only 2 things I can think of).
Overall WoW is a very good game, It’s polished, bugs usually get squished pretty rapidly, their CS have always been polite and helpful to me, so I would say that generally WoW is ‘one of the best’, there are areas where other games surpass WoW but an MMO isn’t just one system or item but a sum of the individual parts.
It would depend on who you ask
I would say yes, but I do that because I’ve tried most all MMO’s and thought they were all lacking severely in making you feel engaged in the early levels.
Something that WoW nowadays suffers from as well, but didn’t used to when I first started it and now I’m already past that lack of initial engagement
The only other MMO that didn’t have this was the Starwars one but mechanically it felt like a WoW clone or atleast heavily WoW inspired
