I cannot find any guides. Is that thing at all skill-based or is it totally random and whether you stand or move, just click the extra action when it’s ready?
you need to be at least renown 7 or have fishing at at least 25 to craft your harpoon, then use it
For the WQ you don’t need the harpoon, just gain an extra button
To use the extra button/item just stand in the general direction of the tartget - the lunker - and use it
When you use your harpoon you gain a tug-of-war ability as your extra action button, when you use it you drag the mob towards you.
About all you can do with it, is get the upgraded version, which just gives you a longer reach (casts further). Top tip when you cast at a target, try to be at an area where there are no obstructions (flat surface). Once you have cast and hit your target, walk your toon backwards further inland (so you get it on land quicker). Thats about it really. The extra action button is kinda random if it yoinks the fish closer.
for WQ you don’t even need it, just shoot and kill, no need for harpoon, it will still drop quest item

Indeed it does
The extra-action button pulls the fish towards you and the farther you are “inland” the chances are better the fish will be pulled on shore where it “suffocates” and die
More time it is in the water, more chance for the “fish rage” to kick in and go deep when reach max
More people drags the fish, the sooner it will be on shore!
Not to mention, the bigger - sometimes the smaller ones too- Lunkers have the bad habit to pull back and if you lands in the water deep enough to swim/breath meter appear the Lunker will be free , so it is wise to be as far as you could get from the water after harpooning it
The fish can surge way past you onto land, so that makes me doubt that being far inland matters for the small ones.
