I’ve seen people “increasing their item level” what is that and how do you do it? spoiler i started playing like 2 days ago
In that case you dont have to worry about that until you hit lvl 120, after that you are going to start gearing up, meaning trying to get better gear and increasing your power.
For now just focus on leveling and learn to play the game, dont worry about anything
Welcome and good luck!
All our gear has an item level. As Sandario says, this isn’t really an issue or something you need to worry about until you get to the end game.
It’s partly how we become more powerful. Ilvl is not king though, sometimes lower pieces particularly those with sockets stray stronger.
Enjoy your journey, you only get that new feeling once, it’s the best thing in the world.
Better gear you wear (helmet, chest, trinker ring , etc. ) equals higher item lvl. you won’t even be able to see your item level until you’re lvl 110 i think.
For now, just do quests and learn more about the game. After maxing your level, you can focus on other stuff like ilvl.
Each bit of gear has a numerical value called “item level” (ilvl for short), and that level determines the total value of all the stats it has (strength / haste etc). Higher level gear is more powerful because it increases your stats more. Different content is “tuned” for a minimum item level averaged across your character. For example, normal quests in BfA need a much lower ilvl than current raid.
As you increase your character level by running through old content you will continually pick up new gear with a higher ilvl just by completing quests. Eventually you will reach the maximum ilvl dropped by quests for an expansion and you can either start doing the harder dungeons and raids in that expack, but more likely just go to the next expack.
Once you get to the end of the current patch for current expack, you’ll be able to get maximum possible level items by doing the harder content. When the next patch comes out, almost all gear rewards will increase in ilvl and current gear will become obsolete.
When you have caught up, you should read up on RNG, sockets, Titan forging, Benthic gear and the different ilvls of rewards from different types of content. Also, read up on simming your character as gear with a slightly higher ilvl than what you already have may not improve your character, due to how stats are distributed on the item.
Each item has a level. Item with higher level has more points in total in all of it’s stats. They can be redistributed differently but total should be the same for same item level.
Now when someone speaks of an character’s item level they speak about avarage item level. It’s just an avarage value calculated from all of your equipped items(tabard and shirt don’t count). So it is a rough estimate of a player power.
Of course in order to measure your actual power you need to take into account what stats your item have, what talents, etc. It’s just much more advanced stuff
You don’t need to worry about it till max level. As you level up you will constantly get higher item level rewards.
To give you an Idea : an item 15ilvl higher than another has around 15% more stats, although the ratio of primary stats (agility, intelligence, strengh stamina) and secondary stats (Crit, haste, mastery, versatility…) may change.
Ilvl is an indication of stats but does not apply to their practical use.
Such as haste may be your most important secondary stat, but you may get a piece of gear that is 20 ilvls higher but has your least important stats on it, and would replace a piece with haste on it.
In this scenario it could very well be a downgrade.
So think of it as an indicator of how many values it has on it, and not about how they apply to you.
You need to do that yourself.
