I've been trying to pick a main for 10 years

Hey everyone!

I really need help picking a main because I can never stick to one character. I always had this problem of not being able to pick a main with every game I ever played. I’ll just lay out what I like about each class and I need your opinion or your way of solving this problem. I also will talk about what my history with the class is. Since I started the game, I non-stop switched mains but I really want a character that I play all the time that I can call on my own and that I can master in. FYI, I do PvP only but I don’t care about the meta, I just want it to be fun for me. I love all roles(healer, tank, dps) and I love all classes.

Starting with:
Warrior: I only love Fury here, I love the weapon animation and the feels of holding 2 giant swords that attack so fast and so hard that creates a beautiful combat experience.

Paladin: I only like Retribution because of the melee light attacks.

Hunter: I love the pets, I love the range combat and coming out of stealth like you’re actually going to hunt someone. I even had a dream where I was a marksmanship hunter and was staying in stealth in the bushes of Alterac Valley just to come out and snipe the person riding through the road.

Rogue: One of my most played classes. I love the stealth aspect and I love being able to go into the back side of the enemy field and pick out whoever I want to stunlock to death. I love Subtlety and Outlaw. I love Sub’s insane damage with stunlocks, I love Outlaw’s weapon movement playstyle overall and damage.

Priest: Also one of my most played classes, I used to love all 3 specs until they changed Discipline. I love being able to move around fast while casting light heals. I love Disc’s shields and Penance aspects. I love Holy’s light heals, it’s basically the best looking light heals in the game with that ability that turns you into a complete yellow angel that floats which I forgot the name of, I love that as well! Shadow is insane, the dot damage and the animations are so unique, fun, and great looking!

Shaman: I love the elements in the class, the way you use water to heal, lightning, earth, fire, and air to attack, it just makes it beautiful. I’m an Avatar The Last Airbender fan so I’m not into all the totems stuff but the elements.

Mage: I love all 3 specs. Fire is great with big damage, fast gameplay, lots of ways to trick, and great animation. Frost wise, I love the animations, the slow is insane. Arcane also has great animations, the combo point system in arcan is great on damage and the abilities look so flashy and nice!

Monk: I love the chi spells for the healer, the waving while healing and filling people up is so cool! I also love the Windwalker and literally everything about the Windwalker. I love the tiger, the spinning crane kick and the fists of fury. Lovely!

Warlock: My most played class so far, I love all 3 specs. Demonology has pets and does insane looking animations and dark spells while summoning a ton of demons and attacking with them as well. Destruction has great animation, but the biggest thing is that it’s easy to use but hard to master, I love that it can make a player go half hp with a single 2 second cast of Chaos Bolt. Affliction is the one I played the most so far, I love to be able to literally drain the person’s hp so fast unlike any other spec. I love the aspect of dots and seeing numbers pop up non-stop.

Druid: I love all 4 specs, Feral’s bleed and cat form is amazing, Tank’s looks and hp and gameplay is amazing, Resto’s HoT’s are amazing, I love seeing heals like affliction draining but the other way around. Balance has great animation and can almost non-stop cast Starsurges which deal a lot of damage and looks amazing.

Demon Hunter: I like both specs, but I love the tank spec because of how it can get so fast and how big it can turn out to be.

Death Knight: I love Frost and Blood. Frost with the new expansion will have 2H swords back which is my favorite thing in the game honestly, I love the animation and big crits like you would in Destruction Warlock, I love the forsty spells and just the feels like you’re Arthas himself. I love frost because of the animations but more for the health and gameplay.

I’d appreciate if any of you can show me a way to pick my main, thank you! :slight_smile:

If you truly love all the classes, then why not pick a main randomly? Roll the dice, use a random number generator or something.

While 2h-Frost is coming back, weapon damage scaling of Obliterate is not.

Don’t pick a main - play all.

Picking a main is hard
Eventually the ennui kicks in… thats unavoidable, sooner or later you became tired of that class and spec
Its good to have several “mains”, or shall we say, several alts you play more or less equally, to keep things fresh and diverse; ranged, meele, caster, pet user, Elf, Draenei, or anything; whatever your little heart desire!
Have fun, thats the whole point!

I share your struggle man… I have a thread here in general discussion as well. Also need help. My favorites is Druid, mate, priest and DH.

Priest was my main classic, TBC, Cataclysm WoTLK

Crusader is a must-have at everything while Razorice got some competition: Rune of Hysteria

I think you should keep them all and just play what you enjoy most at the time.

Usually classes cycle through being flavour of the expansion and if you haven’t got an all time favourite (I love my paladins) I think having 1 of each class you enjoy is the best answer because you can then just main the one that is most fun that expansion.

I notice monk is missing from that list. Try a monk class trial. But honestly you dont need a main. Honestly shadowlands the more alts the better for tourgast and 4 covenant stories, so go nuts.

Is Torghast and stuff a requirement or is it just for PvE? I also added monk now thanks :slight_smile:

Tourghast is required but only a little as far as we know right now. But it will be fun to experiment with all the classes.

The 4 covenants is not madnatory, you play through all 4 then pick 1. But im planning on having each alt in a different covenant ad they have their own campaign like class halls

I’d say Druid, simply because they literally do anything.
Why do you play X class too? If you’re a Druid I can guarantee you can spec differently to at least satisfy your temporary urges, because thats what it’s all about really.

I’ve been the same in BFA. Started rogue, then wanted to be tankier so went DK, then wanted to be ranged so went Hunter, but then missed having flashy visuals so went Ele Shaman, then wanted to be Melee so went Enh… then I was even wanting to heal so started going Resto Shaman, i’ve also played around with Prot Pally tanking.
Then I wanted to be ranged again and now I am back Aff Warlock, and enjoying it. Ranged is my personal favorite, I played Mage for 8+ years exclusively.

If I was a druid I’d have gone from Feral to Balance, swapping different talents, to Resto, then to Guardian, back to Feral, etc.
I’d have satisfied all my random urges to be X type of character while still being the same character, not resetting reps, stories & gear every time I change.

Maybe you disagree but for me being an alt person is just about thinking the grass is always greener. You see X spec do something, you want it too.

Well, I have no idea what else to do.

Could be! Now I reduced all the classes to 3 which are: Warlock, Rogue, and Druid.

These helped a lot!

I feel like I want to put everything in one, progress in Reputations, professions, gold making, mount farming, transmogs, gearing, I just want to focus all these to one so I can get more progress overall.

Monk

Like druid, can do everything (I’m not going to consider ranged DPS and melee DPS distinct enough here given they’re both a DPS role).

Unlike druid, you benefit from your mogs for the expo, druids spend most of their time looking at either a bear’s backside, a cat’s backside, a moonkin’s backside or a glowly blue version of yourself where you cannot see your mog. Resto is the one exception to this.

Monk tanks always scale very well into expansions so they’re always an enjyoable choice to play. Their unique tanking style means they pretty much always have a spot in raids and dungeon tanking becauseof the sheer power of being able to dilute big hits into smaller ones.

WW has a cool playstyle which have a high skill ceiling and rewards you highly if you pull it off, also fun to play in PvP with the mobility and utility to provide.

Mistweaver is a flexible healer that is never in a terrible spot balance wise. It’s also quite a fun healer because it has a lot of mobility, utility and can play from the back or in the frontlines.

Second hearthstone to “town” via Zen Pilgrimage -> Portal is really useful.

Can fly on a cloud.

Neat casting animations.

Cool class-specific mogs

Wide racial distribution so you can pick pretty much any race you want.

Alright, fair enough. It can be a bit frustrating at times but having that one shining character is definitely nice to have.

I would pick something that is survivable and can solo most things, can be efficient in farming old content, shares the same armour material with the majority of your alts and has another role option e.g. healer and tank spec. I hope that helps a bit.

Edit: Having re-read the other replies, based on your now 3 choices, I would recommend druid!

For years I have been like you OP.

I was like: NOW i am going to be a paladin and do EVERYTHING on it! -> OH! That priest there looks super neat… I’m gonna be an awesome priest and I will do EVERYTHING on it! … But wauw… look at that shaman. Screw priest I’ll be shaman instead!
Oh wow that frostmage sure looks like loads of fun :thinking:… OKAY I will be a Frostmage HAH! What’s that? Demo lock gets reworked? OKAY! I WILL BE WARLOCK AND STICK TO IT!!
… goes off to play druid :rofl:

Now I ain’t gonna say anything about that druid. In fact I aint gonna talk at all about maining. I will just play the game and asume that one char will become a main all of the suddon out of nowhere :stuck_out_tongue:
