Today I woke up with the realization that in 2024 we’ll mark 10 (TEN) years since the release of Warlords of Draenor. Compared to that, Cataclysm and Mists of Pandaria are ancient history in terms of gaming! And they’re still a strong part of nostalgia. Not because Cata was great (I’ll agree with many of you it wasn’t), but because Cata-MOP were the times I was mostly invested in World of Warcraft. Not only game-wise, but also story-wise. The forums were active, we were asking what’s going to happen with Sylvanas, with Lordaeron, when will (if ever) Lordaeron, Gilneas, Stromgarde returned to the Alliance. We worried that it was too much defeat for the Alliance, Varian was nowhere to be seen, that we had too much Thrall, that Alliance cities were getting destroyed. These were emotional times, for us, the players.
And it all happened 13-14 years ago! It’s good to re-experience the thrill back then… seeing the world shattered, Stormwind - damaged, the park-gone, and the statue-toppled. It’s all gone from either iterations of the game - Classic and Retail.
I miss those times. I lived much simpler life, without kids, with newly met girlfriend (now wife), and I cared too much about WoW. Maybe the time will come in 2030s, if I am alive, when I’ll miss my early 2020s and the release of Shadowlands, so I may want to see SL classic. God forbid, this was really the worst expansion for me, but who knows how I’ll feel in the future?
So far I’d really want to replay Cataclysm… Let it come

Cata wasn’t bad, it was great. Had the best class balance to date. Before previous expans some classes were not even optimal or was only allowed to heal.
The raids were amazing. Challenging. Especially heroic dungeons on release.
A big as.s dragon burning the world to a crisp. The revamped quests, that actually makes sense now and brings a sense of story. Not just “Go kill this bad guy, hes leading an evil operation!” After hes dead… oh u thought this operation actually was a threat? No it was just a guy we wanted killed, nothing more, carry along now.
Cata made 1-60 bareable & fun.
The only thing i’d say was a downside was the talent system forcing a specialization. But i guess it helped streamline a bit more to what each spec actually did, like Druids Feral specc.

For me cata and mop are part of OLD world of warcraft before changing game completely in WoD

Ye you are right cataclysm did many things right fixed mayn specs and most annoying stuff from WOTLK but it was still true to OLD believes
in my opinion cata was just fixed WOTLK
IF cata came out with Lich king on front cover everybody would scream how good it is

im personally fascinated how everyone seemingly flipped from this collective idealization that post wrath was awful to cata (and mop and legion) being one of the best versions of the game, overnight

It didn’t happend overnight
Like there was people loving cata during cata and mop and when it’s ended there were popular private servers for cata later MOP so people fell in love with it exactly like Private servers for Wotlk made wotlk the GREATEST expansion as people call it
I personally spend years on cata private server with thousands of people
Now imagine there were more of those servers
it’s like 80’ music

Yes, for me the entire classic thing is about nostalgia
(Not to be negative, just to set up the point…)
I would always describe WLK as the peak of my WoW experience, loving Northrend forests.
I have all the music extracted up until they changed the format, used to listen to it.
Sure, I have found higher quality visuals (Youtube, Skyrim) for these places.
But I can’t make myself progress and that’s weird.
On my two roaming mains, completed 1.8 and 0.8 zones respectively. Oops
I do, however, have a lot of fun in dungeons!
Which is what I did back then, aside from Loremaster.
Raiding and making use of all the ICC10 tanking gear…
Also had lots of fun with the mage in Netherstorm.
As such, I’m looking forward to the Cataclysm dungeon stuff as well.
(On the other hand, I’m not yet ready for the drunken monkeys of Pandaria yet.)
Yes, I admit it. It’s part of the nostalgia, a huge one by the way, but on the other hand Cata/MoP are the best iteration of WoW ever created. Peak PVP gameplay, great raids and dungeons, excellent class design, etc…I am not playing Vanilla again, it’s like driving a Fiat and now you are driving a Porsche…

At this point I’m even nostalgic for Legion. Who knows if we ever reach that point in classic’s life. People can say what they want, Legion was a gem of an expansion.
Because people who loved WOTLK or earlier versions are mostly gone or in SOD. Look how little this forum is active now. Only people waiting for CATA are still here.
