Just reached level 50

I play for a week and already got level 50 and I’m completely lost. How do I get better gear or get some cool mounts or what should I do first?I don’t want to buy Shadowlands before I’m more confortable with the game.

Hey Gicamagie,

Welcome to the game and congrats on hitting 50
Your question is pretty loaded, and the sheer amount of things you can do is far too much to put into a digestible format here. I’ll jot down a few things that come to mind for myself, and hopefully some other folks will have some neat tips for you too.

First off, a little disclaimer: gearing up and answering the question “what do I do now?” is pretty difficult without taking the current expansion into consideration. It’s absolutely understandable you want to give the game a try before buying SL, but just know that the options might be a little limited, since most of the community’s activity have shifted to SL content (especially concerning getting better gear). This doesn’t mean you can’t do them anymore, but it might make it difficult to find groups or see players out in the “endgame” BfA content.

Here are some things coming to mind from my end:

  1. If you’ve enjoyed the BfA story so far, you can continue onwards on the War Campaign. You won’t get the absolute best gear from this, but will be introduced to the continuous story of the previous expansion, and be able to explore the new zones they’ve added in patches 8.2 and 8.3.
Wowhead has a fantastic walkthrough for the war campaign, and all it’s various prerequisites:
  1. The first and quickest way coming to mind to gear up into slightly better gear (if I remember correctly and given that this isn’t messed up by scaling) is Benthic Gear, which you can find in Nazjatar, the area for the 8.2 patch.
Wowhead has also a quick overview of the gear and how to get it, however keep in mind I’m going out on a limb here and am nto sure how easy this is to obtain nowadays:
  1. Run some old dungeons and/or raids. This is super fun, and something I myself do quite a lot on various characters. You should be able to solo most old dungeons and raids, leading up to Legion content where it could get a little difficult by yourself. Up until then, there are however roughly 35 raid instances, most of which have unique appearance sets for classes, as well as a whole lot of mounts and pets that can rarely drop from it’s bosses.

  2. If BfA’s story didn’t interest you so much, and in general something I would highly advise you give a try in any case is to start leveling your next character, this time through a different timeline. Now that you have your first character at level 50, a new NPC called Chromie becomes available. I won’t go too much into detail about this here, since you’ll be introduced to her in game, but she basically allows you to level your next character through a previous expansion, thereby experiencing a whole new storyline and new zones.
Maybe trying a class that’s completely different to a mage will have you be more comfortable with the game? Try a rogue or warrior to be up-close and personal with enemies, or try out a warlock if you preferred magic users but want to give pets a try. Dare I say maybe even try an alliance race?

The 4 points above only scratch the surface. If any of the points tickle your fancy and you want to learn more about any of it, please let me know. Happy to help further, otherwise I’m sure other posters here will come up with great things too

Hi!

I would perhaps look for a guild, either on the forums or in game. It makes it more fun and a lot easier when you have someone to play with.
Lvl 50 is not the max lvl anymore, so tbh the next 10 lvls from 50 - 60 (that is Shadowlands) you will be fine with lvling and following the story at your own pace. You will get better gear as you are questing through the story.
If you however don’t want to do that, then unlocking world quests in Zuldasar will give you some new gear items. It depends on what world quests are up at moment.
Otherwise I guess you could unlock Nazjtar, Mechanome island and eventualy the N’zoth visions. But I think these things would be very boring now that everyone else have moved on.
For mounts and nice looking gear (tho the items will not be better) you can try your luck in old raids, but that will also be easier at lvl 60.
So my recommendation is that if you like the game, get Shadowlands, get through the story and look for a nice guild while doing it. It will be more fun at the end.

Hope you get some nice drops and have some fun! Wish you the best of luck, and last but not least: Welcome to Azeroth!
