Kekmorgs Journey in Shadowlands

This is sequel to the first part of the journey.

Towards the planes of the dead

Last time I was level 48 in Vol’dun and I got recruited to rescue the faction leaders who had been kidnapped by angry winged men. I had still sand in my bucket-like plate boots when I was warped through space and time into literal Hell. Wandering around Maw I gathered bunch of new friends like frosty mage Jaina, picky weapon carrier Thrall, stab dummy Baine and Highlord bucket-head (something something can’t remember his name). Big sad, got ambushed by angry winged men and their boss so ended up ditching my gang and warp to floating ring city of Oribos. I learned how the leader(???) of Oribos had fallen asleep and suddenly all the souls were sent down the drain instead of passing them to proper zones. To investigate, I was sent towards Bastion.

Journey to Bestion (sic), levels 50 to 54

We used some of the anima juice in Oribos to activate the gateway to Bastion and oh man what a place! The golden plains and very chill atmosphere was just what I needed after gritty sands of Vol’dun. (I wish I could become one of the blue fellas, they looked cool). I got acquinted with Pelagos and what’s-her-name. I helped here and there, petting Larions and teaching formations Phalynxes. I wish I could fly in the zone to enjoy every single place and view. Questing in Bastion was okay-ish and I liked the extra ability I received in the zone. My holiday in Bastion was cut short as the fire nati… undead nation attacked. Necrotic Wake was enjoyable dungeon, especially the hook boss had interesting mechanic. Anyway, from Bastion I was sent to Oribos and from Oribos I was sent to Maldraxxus.

Maldraxxus levels 54 to 57

This zone is badass. I dont care about Bastion, I dont care about any other zones. This is heavy metal zone with bones and mayhem. Plague Deviser Marileth stole my heart, he must be protected at all costs. I didn’t really care about Draka and the others. I liked the side quests and exploration more than the story quests, but I enjoyed my time the most here. The last boss of Plaguefall was nice though.

Mehh-weald 57 to 59

Zone 5/5, enchanted forest, great visuals, great music. Story 0/5. I had fun in Maldraxxus, Ardenweald felt like a filler to the story. “This seed must be protected” and ahh wow, it turned out to be a dragon rawr. Pretty random in my opinion, but the cinematics were good. Still I have to admit, Ardenweald gave me the best ability so far! The magical slash is chefs kiss. Questing in this zone felt like a chore and the terrain was pain in butt to travel by ground.

P.S. the celestial critters were creepy A F. Reminded me of the holiday critters in South Park, did not enjoy at all.

Revenmehh 59 to 60

Revendreth, so beautiful, eerie and castlevania-ish. Venthyrs are charming and I really enjoyed the start of the story in the zone as I got away from lady boonmerry and dinklewinks. However I lost the interest in the story as I reached level 60. I had done like 3 chapters of the zone by then and the rest of the story felt like a chore. I did not enjoy the abilities they gave me at all.

60 yay…

So I reached level 60, hooray I can leave Shadowlands behind. I would like to do some pvp but I get absolutely smashed. Waiting 20 minutes only to get stomped on has not been fun so I gave up with pvp. I was told to get legendaries and to Zereth Mortis but there is so much stuff to do and legendaries seem so expensive as per my research. At the moment I am stuck finding a way to free the Runecarver as I cannot get molten anima for quest when Jailer is killing me on the zone so I am stuck with the story. I farmed timewalking and heroic dungeons for gear and also got into one mythic dungeon. I also participated in LFR but the que times to Castle Nathria and Sanctum of Domination have been ridiculous so only got to do Sepulcher of the First Ones.

The experience at lvl 60 has not been worth the time I have spent. So far the most fun I have had at level 60 has been doing Warlords of Draenor raids with my new friend in-game, selling stuff in AH and building my Garrison (which I recently got to tier 3! ). I am happy that I have Shadowlands so I have access to Soulshape and Ancient Aftershock, but that’s pretty much it.

Closing words

This is where Kekmorgs journey ends. I have decided to retire my warrior and start a new journey with my shaman. I was advised to let my subscription to run out so I can play as level 20 character through the expansions in Chormie Time now that I have it unlocked. With my new shaman I have felt the same excitement as on the beginning of Kekmorgs journey. I cannot encounter similar NPC in my travels as Urobi the Walker on my first journey.

You are correct Kekmorg.

WoW is simply not a game worth playing and especially not paying for. The ideal experience would honestly to do what you said and to level to 50 and then let the subscription run out so you can just experience all expansions chronologically via Chromie time. Since Chromie time scales content to your level it means you will remain at 20 but you’ll be able to complete all quests and storylines the way they are meant to have been experienced.

Here’s a little tip: Create your new character while your sub is still active and then join a big social guild. You will be able to remain in the guild when you log on to the character after your sub has ended. If you create the character without a sub you won’t be able to join guilds.

For that you either have to nerf exp gain to an abyssmal level, or you have to force people to complete the story just like FFXIV does. And people hate that aspect of the game…

This is absolute nonsense. New players LOVE going through the expansions in chronological order and they LOVE doing that in FFXIV. I am in newcomer chat and people frequently ask why they are thrown into BfA and why they cannot go back and people also frequently ask how they can unlock Chromie time and they are shocked when they hear that they need to level to 50 before they can go back to old expansions.
People in FFXIV love the storyline and going through it. Why do you think is WoW dead…? Because there are zero new players joining the game. I am in several large Steam groups and various other popular games. Popular, not dead like WoW and I have asked a lot of younger players about WoW and they are not interested in WoW at all. They either google the game and look at pics and say “yeah not my game” or they say they tried it but didn’t like it.

You literally have no idea what you are talking about.
Please keep your boomer opinion to yourself.

Out of my about 30 mates from various MMOs only a single one made it to the end of FF’s story. Everyone else gave up in about Heavensward. Doing the same repetitive thing that bars you from endgame content for several dozens of hours is not a good thing when you have a friend group that is waiting for you to play together.

I’m in nowcomer chat as well, and I can attest that yes, people want to do Chromie time and do not want to level in BfA. But forcing everyone to do the whole story is not a solution.

You have the same confirmation bias that I do, just on the other side. Most people I know are tired of the story after the first 60 levels. Mostly due to the reason that the first 50 hours of FF story and gameplay is atrocious. And that is a generally accepted fact. While I agree that current FF story is better than current WoW story, it is only a part why some people prefer FF.

Yup.

I’ve been contacting new players through the Newcomers forum since WoD, maybe Mists.

The one thing I can say for sure is that everybody generalising about New Player is WRONG.

New Players come in all shapes and sizes, ages and interests. Many just want to see the quests and wander the world. Some find WoW PvP not nearly cut-throat enough for them. Some are veterans of other MMOs just checking it out. Some are veterans returning from Classic. Many, like Kekmorg, love all the levelling, and are turned off at max level by the Kafkaesque maze of blank walls they hit.

There is no typical new player. There is no generalising about them.

Thanks for the guild tip!

That is very clever advice.

You can try out different races, different classes, different realms (though I’d say you’re already on the right realm for Horde - just DON’T roll Alliance on Draenor :stuck_out_tongue: ), whatever you are interested in.

And then when you have a whole bunch of characters at Level 50 and know your way around, you can decide … actually, by then, you will probably be deciding whether to buy the next expansion. :stuck_out_tongue:

Not just any dragon. This was a dragon you, the adventurer, have known and worked with for years. An old friend. This, incindentally, also explains why her spirit reacted so stroingly to you. You killed her, when she was controlled by a bad guy, Xavius. She died in Legion, in a big set-piece, so it was appropriate for her to return in another big set-piece.

Here’s her death, if you want to get a sense:

P.S. Even without a sub, you can post on the New Players forum, so feel free to do so anytime you’d like a hand with something.

Thanks for the tips. I will most likely replay Shadowlands quests once I have discovered all the previous expansion zones and learned the story.
