Keybind problems with brewmaster, how do i master brewmaster?

Im struggling to find myself using the correct keybinds to make brewmaster work for me.

my keybinds to gain aggro which might be weird for some of you but does work for me works as followed:

1 = touch of death
2 = tiger palm
3 = rising sun kick
4 = blackout kick
Q = black ox statue (macrod as instantly put on the ground)
E = breath of fire
R = keg smash
Shift +3 = spinning crane kick
Shift + 4 = exploding keg
Shift + R = AOE macro taunt (combines with black ox statue)
V = Roll (mobility)
X = Tiger’s lust (mobility)

However when using these keybinds as followed it kinda disregards i think all/most of my defensive abillties their executions very poorly and thus i ask here: tanks among you on how to master brewmaster completely.

  1. should i l use more macros that entail using castsequence by using 2 abillties in one macro?

  2. where do you put most of your defensive abillties such as Fortifying Brew, Purifying brew or Black Ox brew?

  3. where do you put Tiger’s lust if its not the same as my keybind?

  4. i am kinda a control freak so i really want like 1000% aggro on the mobs i pull (not sure if that is possible)

I can’t be of a lot of help as I have an MMO mouse and use the side buttons. I do however use Z and C as well as the key binds you’re using.

Well atleast i am doing something good.

do you think having a MMO mouse is required to play as a tank in MMO games?

Use the “Single-Button Assistant” ? :wink:

I have defensive bound on mouse wheel up/down, I also use vuhdo for some abilities like: right click for tiger’s lust and middle click for dispell.
An MMO mouse is not required but it makes things more comfortable, I use 6 buttons out of 12 with also shift modifier

Rule of thumb:

The buttons closest to WASD should be assigned to the abilities you use most frequently. Defensive abilities and interrupts should be further away; if you want them close to WASD, [mod] them in a macro with one of your most used abilities.

F, G, T, Tab and Capslock are good keybinds too, maybe worth using.

If you’re comfortable with it, use at least some ctrl mod keybinds and not just shift mod keybinds.

A lot of mouses has 2 extra buttons at least, those are worth using.

Clique addon let’s you use left and right click as key bindings for mouseover on frames. I use this addon to keybind some friendly spells, for example.
Shift + left click = blessing of freedom (on paladin, you can use for tigers lust)
Shift + right click = dispel (detox if you use that)

You can use macros to put both friendly and offensive abilities on the same keybind, for example
#showtooltip
/cast [@mouseover,help]vivify;rising sun kick

That let’s you cast vivify if you mouseover a friendly target, and if you don’t it will try to cast rising sun kick.

If your scroll wheel is good you can keybind Action page one to scroll down, and Action page two to scroll up. This gives you a second action page but with the same keybinds on it, and is highly effective if you learn how to use it. Sadly, my scroll wheel is worn out and if I scroll down it may sometimes decide that I’m scrolling up, so it’s too unreliable for me.

Those are the pointers I’ve got for now, brew sadly don’t have a lot of amazing macros to be used so their benefit is limited.

As for my own keybinds/macros:

1: tiger palm
2: blackout kick
Shift + 2: touch of death
3: breath of fire
Shift + 3: paralysis
4: vivify on friendly mouseover, rising sun kick othervise (macro)
Shift + 4: celestial brew
5: exploding keg and provoke (on black ox statue if it exists, othervise on target) (macro)
Shift + 5: summon black ox statue
R: keg smash
Shift + R: tigers lust (on mouseover if it exists, othervise on me. With a macro you can just have tigers lust and keg smash keybind on r, but I decided to split them because of unknown reasons)(macro)
Capslock: expel harm
F: spear hand strike (interrupt)
Shift + F: provoke (taunt)
Extra mousebutton one: roll
Shift + extra mousebutton one: spinning crane kick
T: weapons of order + signet trinket (burst macro with trinket in slot 13)
Shift + T: trinket in slot 13 (I don’t use this on brew, but I do it for other tanks where I have double on use trinkets)
Tab: chi burst
§: purifying brew
V: fortifying brew
Shift + v: diffuse magic
G: Dampen harm
Ctrl + G: crackling jade lightning
Shift + spacebar: zen meditation
Shift + extra mousebutton two: shadowmeld (racial ability)

All in all I think I use 12-13 keybinds + macros for modifiers and mouseovers, but I decided it was best to list it this way in case you want to bind hotkeys individually instead of creating macros.

Those are my combat keybinds, I’ve got a couple other I use for mounts and buffs too. Hope it helps! If you have any questions just shoot for it, I consider myself a pretty skilled player and can probably help you out with most of your issues.

You are giving prime keybind space to an ability you will use once every 1,5 minutes, that this a sin.

Most of the other keybinds are more or less ok, but let me share mine in order to give some ideas (excluding gaming mouse).

main abilities: 1-4,q,e,r,t
potions: 5,6
interrupt on all classes: `
defensives: f,g
cds: F1,F2,F3,F4
utility: shift 1-6

Generally the buttons closer to wasd should be reserved for main rotation and short cds. Keybinds a bit further away should be used for cds. Try to use similar keybinds across different specs/classes, in order for muscle memory to carry a bit of the weight (things like speed, interupt, defensives, cds, etc)

No, but Im a holy pala main so buttons always feel at a premium! You don’t need an mmo mouse it can just make things easier.

I have 6 of the side buttons on my mouse bound, plus I use 1-6 on the keyboard, q,e, z, c and r plus some of them with a alt modifier as well. For alts I bind similar spells to where I have them on my main, e.g. stuns tend to be on 6, interrupt is 1 on tanking toons and alt+r on casters.

From what I’ve seen some BW monks put tiger palm + rsk/bk on a macro.
You should also use modifiers that follow some sort of logic, let’s say breath of fire or keg smash are aoe spells, so you can use shift + e or shift + r (or ctrl or whatever) for spinning crane kick.
Long CDs like ToD you put on buttons that you reach not as easy. I personally have it on shift+space, which is easy to reach because I got everything on something that’s easy to reach I guess :grin:

On something that’s easy to reach like q,e,r,f and if it’s a bigger cooldown then it’s shift+ q,e,r,f

shift + middle mouse button

I use 1-5, Q E Z X F R T G, and M3-M5.

1-5 for spammed abilities.
Q for utility [Bubble/Grip/Dash/etc.]
E for Execution or hard hitting proc/condition abilities.
Z for Interrupt
X for CCs
R for Defensive
T for dispel
F for Heal
G for long CDs
M3-M5 for CDs.

I use Shift as a modifier.

Keyboard and mmo mouse. Everyone use keybinds that works for them.

Mouse

Im going to give this a try, thank you very much.

Good luck!
Beware that adapting to new keybinds usually takes a while. I wouldn’t be surprised if it takes 5-10 dungeons until you begin to feel more comfortable with it.

Each time someone is not happy with your tanking, take a shot. Eventually you will have understood that the essence of brewmaster is to drink brews to stagger the damage of attacks directed at you, including verbal attacks. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Serious reply: the mice with many buttons help a lot for binding everything for keys
