Quick post…Layering has ruined this experience, Firemaw is locked, it’s populated it’s busy, but you’d NEVER ever know that or guess it unless you’re in the right layer, the world is dead, we have about 12-14 layers half the time and it’s just trash, the betas will complain that “too many people at once causes fps drops and we can’t farm” but those of us who don’t give a damn about that and just want the massive world to look like it’s actually being played.
IDK, I just think layering is crap, either that or just cut down the layers so my world doesn’t look like i’m playing a single player rpg.
So you prefer to play in a single layer where 1231231 players are blocking vendors, casting spells and making your computer wants to jumps off the window, and then come here and complain your game runs with 10fps?
Layers make sense when a new open world content gets released and many people gather for outdoor activities at one point. Layering hurts the overall player interaction and immersive feeling of the world. Other than that its caused by bad server management from Blizzards side. By enabling free transfers from low pop servers to high pop servers, they actively destroyed most smaller servers. The right thing would have been to only allow transfers from full/high pop servers to max medium pop servers. Now players dont have trust in Blizzard anymore. They witnessed that Blizzard is likely to let smaller server die, instead of helping them. Therefore many seek a stable server, to stay with their community. These mega servers, the save haven for players fearing dying servers, cannot function without layering.
At this point its more or less doomed, because players dont trust Blizzard to do good server management anymore. So most players will stick to mega servers and the layering will be necessary regardless of all its downsides.
I did some questing in Howling Fjord during Saturday at 12-17 server time and didn’t run into a single other person. Maybe some AFK guy at the inn but no one out in the world. How come no one is out questing at semi-peak time when the game is like 2 weeks old!?
Finally found some people in the dungeon finder though but outside the dungeon there was only our group and nobody else.
This was on Firemaw the largest servers with over 3000 ppl queues every day since launch but somehow it’s like playing a single player game with a group finder. I haven’t played since and am considering giving up Wrath and wait for the next iteration of Classic season of mastery lol I can’t stand playing when the world is so empty. This is an MMO!
Blizzard has to use Layering because you see what happens when more than 40 people are near each other in AV or Wintergrasp. The servers can not handle it, because they are surely state of the art . People warned about layering at the beginning of classic, saying how bad it is for the world to feel “alive”.
But ofc people kept crying and Blizzard took any excuse to keep it in and basically use it like sharding.
Well gz, you got what you wanted. Now you can play on a gehennas with its 15-30k players peak and you wouldn’t know it because it feels like a server with 700 people thanks to layering.
