In 2023, there were extensive reports of RX 7000 cards where WoW under DX12 caused AMD driver crashes; Blizzard then confirmed that they were investigating a possible AMD/DX12 issue and temporarily recommended DX11. In 2024, there were again reports of AMD driver timeouts in WoW, with AMD driver updates explicitly containing fixes for WoW. In 2025, there were again reports of RX 7900 XTX + WoW + DX12 where switching to DX11 solved the problem. At the start of Midnight in 2026, DX12 problems emerged again. Some players were able to solve the same problems by using DX11. On May 28, 2026, after a minor WoW patch, there was another wave of AMD users with DX12 crashes, including RX 7800 XT, RX 7900 XTX, and RX 9070 XT. A user with an RX 9060 XT eventually also reported that ray-traced shadows could be causing the problem.
And now, in September 2026, we are once again seeing RX 9070 XT/7900 XTX users with DX12 driver timeouts right after a patch.
