So i want to level classic Blacksmithing in the War within. The guides tell me to go to a classic training in SW or Ironforge. But when i speak to them they dont have any options, the one in SW says he cant talk righ now and the one in IF says meet me at the forge. I am supposed to learn new recepies but how can i when the trainers dont talk to you? how do you learn new recepies now?
weird. ive done this horde side and it was ok (expensive but ok).
have you tried with a diff char?
Thereâs supposed to be an NPC somewhere nearby that teaches you the required specialization you were supposed to unlock to continue in the past.
Check on WoWhead for some guides, because you canât just blindly follow a âclassicâ guide as there are differences with Retail.
But it is doable, cause Iâve maxed out blacksmithing to 300 not so long ago.
Ok the guides like wowhead and professions dot com tell you to go to the classic vendor but thats incorrect. I found you had to go to the cataclysm trainer in order to learn classic recepies. They all need to update their guides
The guides are correct, but they are for the âClassic Eraâ version of the game, not retail.
Cataclysm guides should indeed be correct for the most part as all old-world stuff got revamped during that expansion.
You canât learn anything before âcataâ which is the point.
They are called âvanillaâ on by guides on retail.
Not sure what youâre pointing at, the stuff from Vanilla era is still perfectly learnable, and is labeled as âclassicâ in your profession tab.
But when you search âClassic Blacksmithingâ, you get guides for pre-cataclysm, and that does not work 100% because a lot of recipes have been changed, e.g. stuff that used to be a random drop/NPC purchase is in several cases now just trainer obtained.
The materials for a lot of recipes also changed with Cataclysm.
But what the retail client calls âClassic Blacksmithingâ is 100% doable, and even contains extra secrets like old Naxxramas patterns etc.
Old expansion professions are a funny thing on retail. Vanilla and Classic seem to be lumped together, for some reason the game wants to show you Cataclysm recipes while all the others are separated/locked to their respective zones.
However to help you out, i just made a new toon (human) and went to the trainers in Goldshire
As soon as you click on the blacksmithing trainerto show his training he by default shows cataclysm blacksmithing recipes. Scrolling down shows the Classic recipes. The only ones he wonât show are the âspecialâ recipes like ones you have to do quest chains for, like Sulfuras or Thunderfury.
If you only see Cataclysm recipes then try scrolling down further until you see the Classic recipes below. The game doesnât actually TELL you they are Classic recipes, it just assumes you already know.
As a guide, the very bottom Cataclysm recipe you will see is âStormforged Breastplateâ.
The one directly below it on the list should be âCopper chain pantsâ.
That is the original starting point of classic blacksmithing recipes before the profession tabs were merged. It also stacks them in order of Bottom to Top. So the easiest recipes are the ones you will see first as you scroll down.
All other expansion profession vendors, you will need to go to the specific expansion zone. For example for Burning Crusade, you will goto outland. For WotLK, you goto Northrend so on and so on.
To unlock these (unless itâs been changed) you will need to go through a quest chain which can be quite a bit of a slog. It unlocks Old Scholomance before it was changed in MoP and while it doesnât change WotLK Naxxramas to Vanilla Naxx it does unlock special items (as long as you have the Argent Dawn Insignia which you will get after completing the Old Scholomance quest) and the Horseman mount Valiance. But again this involves a little chain and finding âsecretsâ within the Naxxramas raid. To unlock these I strongly suggest the WoW head guide, and use a demon hunter. Itâs ability to double jump and glide will be invaluable when it comes to finding the secret recipe notes. Once you finish the chain on any character the ability to pick up reagents and see the vendor is account wide.
The reason these recipes are not in the trainer inventories is that all the âAncientâ recipes need the reagent âwartorn scrapâ and you will only find in a Naxx raid after you have unlocked the recipe vendor goblin.
For any further profession needs, might I suggest this website?
For my own profession escapades, it has been invaluable.

Iâm not completely sure with the new system, but I think there are multiple entry points to each profession, so Blacksmithing is not anymore a profession but a group that includes Classic, Outland, Northrend, and so on.
When you talk to a trainer as a lowbie you have the option to train specific ones. Usually, given the zone, itâs Classic and Cataclysm, but many more can be offered. Since itâs 10c minus discounts (usually 9c), people just spam it.
Once you do, you have all versions, and once you open the Blacksmithing panel, it always defaults to the most recent one (regardless of your zone), maybe occasionally Chromie-specific, but you can flip it to another one. Close and reopen, you have to flip again.
Some trainers might be expansion specific, for example in Outland you might be restricted to train theirs, simply because back in the day their only offer was Grandmaster (300-375).
