Hi all, I’ve recently been very interested in learning Resto spec. So far I’ve been playing Ele and mostly BM Hunter but really want to try healing. I’ve altered my UI somewhat so I have frames in the center, I’m utilizing Vuhdo, read up about the spec.
I’m actually concerned about trying M+ in pug groups as I have never healed other than the odd 5man around level 20ish
Would I be better just jumping into HC 5mans? Mythic 0s? Or make my own group for Mythics and letting folks know in the description that I’m new to healing ?
I don’t heal, so I’m pretty useless for advice, but I can suggest a couple of things:
For healers specifically, Proving Grounds is a great way to set up your addons/macros and get comfortable with them. They’re a lot easier than they used to be, but if you can get Gold you have mastered your basic mechanics. You seem to have done that already?
Of course doing lower content like HCs will ease you into it more smoothly. I have tried healing enough to know that the way you look at the dynamics of a group, and how it moves through a dungeon, is very different from DPS, so doing a few that way would certainly get you into the mindset.
There are communities that form groups for M+. You might try Calm Keystones [H] Mythics - Calm Keystones or Fail Train https://discord.gg/VsEFRHh to find friendly groups for low M+ if you don’t get them with your guild.
Ah I didn’t know about those discords. My guild are happy to help when they’re free but they all prefer doing higher Keys hah. I’ll definitely check those links however.
The proving grounds I used to try an remember my Vuhdo binds hah. Something I’m still getting use to, need to keep checking them here and there, but that’s something that’ll come over time.
Wouldn’t recommend anything lower than M0 if you want to get (back) into healing. Under M0s (and debatable even M0s) you barely need to heal really, you’re not really triggered to do anything.
What I did when getting back into Paladin healing (hadn’t done that since the beginning of Legion) is just to go for M0s and (it may sound weird) battlegrounds. Why battlegrounds? Simply because in some situation you’ll be forced to heal 1 target whose under heavy fire, another moment you’re supposed to keep 5 up who take heavy damage and another moment you have to focus on your own survivability. Last but not least to help killing targets when nobody is in danger.
While doing these games I just remembered any moment whenever I had a “ugh that wasn’t too convinient” feeling, to either make a macro for it, swap a keybinding or even adjust the ui.
End of the line: Just do it and keep trying to make improvements to make your job easier we can’t really tell you what those are since they’re highly dependant on personal preferences.
I would start with Proving Grounds.
It’s a great way to test your UI and macros without any danger of messing up a real dungeon.
The NPCs don’t mind if you realize mid-combat that you misspelled “Flash of Light” and your macro doesn’t do anything.
Once you’re comfortable with Healer - Silver you’re good to go for Heroics. They are easy enough that you will get some time to DPS between your heals and get accustomed to switching between DPS and healing. Also if you never played healer before they can probably yield some nice Azerite traits that will make your time in M0 easier.
To elaborate on that, Clique is a really great addon for healers, because it allows you to cast heals while hovering over the party/raid frames without using mouseover macros. Furthermore, the keybindings you set in Clique won’t conflict with other actions for the binds outside of the situation when you are hovering over the frames. For example I set most of my heals to various mouse buttons (left button, right button, the scroll wheel).
As for addons for party/raid frames, I really recommend Grid2. Out of the box it doesn’t look too great, but once you customize it, it is really good. All the indicators for buffs and debuffs that you can tweak easily come in really handy. It does require some time for setting it up though.
