You play a clothie? Your rank 4 legendary price is 75k at worst. Plate? 150k. Leather and mail? At best 120k, at worst 350k. Why this discrepancy? Because of the ridiculously low and slow to farm callous hides. Because I decided to roll a shaman I have to pay the equivalent of 2 tokens to upgrade my legendary, whereas someone who decided t roll a priest gets to do it for as little as 50k. This is beyond frustrating as I’m not planning to shill out nearly half my gold for a single piece of armour that I’ll most likely need to spend gold to upgrade again in the future. Crafting it for myself is also not an option, as it would put me at a rough loss of 900k gold. Just up the droprate of Callous Hides by like 300% and the prices might become reasonable, but this needs some work.
I agree. The disparity of material costs between armor types is ridiculous. A cynic would argue that, since most classes wear Leather, Blizzard did this intentionally to promote the sale of tokens. But I’m not sure I’m that cynical yet. Please fix the drop rate of Callous Hides, or reduce the amount needed for a legendary craft.
They ll never do that beacuse its direct slap to their wallet. But its frustrating, wrist rank 3 120k, rank 4 i havent even looked.
You do realise it’s because multi boxers. Can’t multi bot skinning, 1 leather per mob. Where as nodes and loot you can hyper spawn farm and multi box.
It’s not all their fault, my realm pairings are low rated. I rarely see a multiboxer bot and AH for those two realms is not flooded with herbs. Multibox bots are more of a high pop realm issue.
Some mats are just harder to get and require more of them. That’s the major disparity.
Having a guild with skilled enough crafters really helps. In my guild I do all the enchanting. I’m also working on completing the R3 to R4 cloth legend gap for other clothies in my guild.
Yeah that’s true. It’s literally the only profession not wrecked by bots though. Pretty sure I read a while back you do need a ton more mats for leather working. Which is most likely on purpose, to keep it a nice farm for high pop servers. I’d be screwed without my skinning on a high pop server (silvermoon) in all fairness. Literally the only way I can make decent gold without boosting/boxing.
Because Blizzard made Callous Hides and Heavy Callous Hides unreasonably hard to farm.
Drop rate of these things is just ridiculous low.
It’s a market price, not something blizzard has decided.
Use an alt and level it up. You dont need to level through all expansions so it’s only SL LW needed.
Alternatively, finds a guild/guildy who can craft it for you with the mats only.

I said this before but leatherworking supplies both mail and leather gear. so they provide for 6 classes instead of 3 like the others. Add to that like others said you cant farm this as easily trough legal multiboxxing or hyperspawn farming making the mats more pricy as well next to the high demand.
Personally i dont mind it, farming callous hides is a sweet way to make gold.
You can always craft it yourself , but you are not likely to do that because you will need to level up the crafting skill and got to craft many of those base items just to craft a higher ilvl. Wich also is a reason why prices go up for higher ilvl base items.
But yeah heavy callous hide drop rates are super low compared to lightless silk. With the high demand of 6 classes all wanting those items from the same proffesion it wouldnt hurt to make heavy callous hides drop a little bit more often. But this does not seem likely as blizz seems intend on nerfing good leather farming spots, like the one in the garden in the middle of the map. Those birds there don’t even drop leather anymore.
I’m not sure why blizz did not take the same approach as in bfa. Scales for crafting mail and leather for crafting leather. Now with leather and mail sharing the same mats and on top of that having craftable legendaries, prices go trough the roof
It used to be OK on launch week but then they nerfed it by like 70% and put really heavy RNG on it as well.
In my first week of play that heavy callous hide was dropping at a reasonable rate, it was a rare ingredient but not like 1 in 50 mobs rare. I farmed almost 1000 leather yesterday and had only 12 heavy callous hides long with ~65 regular callous hides.
I’m hit and miss on this one because on one hand I make a lot of gold selling those materials (about 25k per hour 2 months after launch, something almost unheard of in any previous expansion where mats usually tanked into “do you value your life at $0,1 per hour” level) but on the other hand I need to spend a lot of those mats (gold) on my legendaries as I main a hunter since forever and mail leggo’s are very expensive.
It’s not just that though, the discrepancy is really just silly. Every one can get cloth materials to drop, and they drop very often, but you can only get leather if you have skinning (obviously) and even then it’s a rare drop.
You need 45 heavy callous hide for rank 4 mail shoulders if I remember correctly.
Compared to 130(?) lightless silk which drop far more often for anyone.
Yeah that’s true, spent about 30 hours skinning. Usually get about 15 of them per hour on a very will kitted hunter. At the same time though 3 hours work for a top Ilevel item you keep for 6 months isn’t all that bad.
I tried to flood my market wih my crafted legos to reduce the price. Not a single one sold. Wheres all this gold at
enchanted hide keeps hanging at around 4.5k gold each. Over 2k for heavy hide.
Just mats for ilvl 190 LW legendary blank exceeds 40k gold, and they sell for 11-16k. THAT’S JUST RANK 1. I gave up my LW character since after 2 weeks I crafted a grand total of 4 items.
Leatherworkers who don’t have 15+ guildies with Skinning (or millions of gold from “other sources” to afford buying the mats instead of gathering them themselves) sending them mats have absolutely no way of getting to rank 4 recipes.
Last few weeks I’m farming several hours a day but it’s still just BARELY enough to keep up with my soul ash income. Now even that has been SEVERELY nerfed thanks to blizzard refusing to ban bots and instead nerfing drops. Now we got less fish, less herbs, etc. DISGUSTING
