I am considering which way to go. As a mail wearer, is it worth to pick up Leatherworking?
Also, can you earn gold with both combos equally and is there a lot of transmog items that you can make as Leatherworker (BoP)? Same for legendary items?
Also, which combo you prefer more, what are benefits of both and which one would you suggest/recommend?
I am more casual/newish player, I don’t farm a lot, only while I am doing quests/grinds (what is on my way). I was herb/alch, but swapped herbalism for LW so I can obtain the Legion LW mount (the white moose looks awesome!) and now I am having a second thoughts, which way to choose?
I have 175 alchemy but didn’t use it a lot, since most of the time I join to LFR and doing the old content for now (started to play 3 months ago, still exploring and enjoy the storylines and campaigns). I was usually just herbing when I am running around and I was selling it or keeping in the bags. My main sources of earning gold were daily/world quests and dungeons/raids.
Also from lore perspective, I see both combos viable, and that doesn’t help at all
Leather-working only has value for creating your legendary item, while alchemy is always useful due to potions, flasks and elixirs needed by raiders and M+ players. Personally I’d recommend picking alchemy over leather-working if you wish to make a long-term profit.
Gathering bots, AH bots automatically undercuting, multiboxers and token kinda makes professions useless. Do better some old raid farming, at least some tmogs, mounts.
The profit margins in alchemy are often tiny depending on your server. You have to be willing to carefully track herb prices throughout the season, purchase when they are cheap, and then be willing to cancel scan continuously throughout a raid night. Otherwise, flasks & potions will pretty much always sell below the current herb price. Of course you could farm the herbs yourself instead, if that’s what you enjoy.
Leatherworking could be quite good if you keep up to date with your dailies in 9.2, and start selling Crafters Mark gear when it is available. Unlike Alchemy, there are also old-world recipes you could hunt, which usually sell for a very nice profit margin. These include Stylin Jungle hats from TBC, Warbear Woolies from Classic, Dreadleather pieces & Leather Love Seat from Legion, etc.
Well, usually I always do dailies and mostly old content things. I am not focused a lot on tracking the AH prices, I just sell if I collect and don’t need them. So Leatherworking seems like better solution, as I can “play” with the profession and mess around making some old gear that looks nice or sells well, and mats are more viable by doing old dungeons or raids since you can do those solo and I play solo almost always. Its also satisfying to craft something for yourself or for someone.
Herbing is easier then skinning, but herbing and leatherworking doesn’t go together, right?
“Profession” is really a misnomer by this stage and has been for a while. They’re hobbies, expensive ones at that. Making gold isn’t really a thing with these hobbies, it’s about what you find fun and not going broke in the process.
There are times when you can make gold from potions and flasks and if you put in the right effort at the right time with the right investment of gold you might make some gold on legendary items. But if you haven’t already put in the time, effort and gold into leveling up the lower ranks then you’re too late for that now.
The only “profession” I have maxed is skinning. Don’t even remember if I leveled Leatherworking in BFA, don’t think so. I must add it to my to-do list for something to do in the post 9.2 drought.
Do you think skinning is “harder” then herbalism since for herbs you don’t have to fight everytime? And also is it herbalism/Leatherworking bad combo? Will I have problems collecting the mats for items that I want to make without skinning (old and new contents)?
Personally I think skinning is the easiest “profession” in the game, especially given the mob density in zone for the past three expansions. But this is from a viewpoint of someone who does it whilst out and about leveling or doing WQs / Callings.
And it should get a little easier soon, they are making it so all skinners can skin a carcass rather than only the first one. so there will be loads of dead mobs available for skinning then.
Herbing involves going out and looking for herbs and getting them before some bot does.
well, its not a bad combo but imo i d drop leatherworking for alchemy or get skinning and leatherworking unless you want to buy stuff off the ah.
do you want to buy stuff/leather/herbs off the ah or entertain another character with the matching professions? yes? great, get herbalism/leatherworking. if you dont then i d recommend to get the according professions.
Thank you for the advices and answers. It seems my playstyle is more oriented on skinning/Leatherworking combo so I will go with that. I like to craft, and not huge fan of going out to farm only, I would rather go and do it while I am doing something useful like quests, etc.
