Hello,
I’ve read on US forums that crafting a single legendary to rank 4 with your profession will cost about 200k gold. I’m pretty sure a lot of us can not afford that, especially if you have alts and/or playing multiple specs.
Can anyone who has BETA can confirm this please?
It depends on what you are willing to farm out yourself, and what prices for materials end up being in the Auction House at release.
Legendary gear pieces are comprised of several components: a Shadowlands crafted legendary base item, two Missives, Soul Ash, and a Memory of the Runecarver. Your base item and Missives can be created with Professions, Soul Ash comes from clearing layers within Torghast; and Memory of the Runecarver recipes can be unlocked through a variety of content in Shadowlands.
This means that if you have Inscription + Herbalism, plus Tailoring/Leatherworking/Blacksmithing on your main (depending on your main’s armour type), you can farm things out yourself.
It will only help you to have many alternate characters in Shadowlands. Meaning:
- One character with Gathering professions (Herbalism + Mining)
- One character with Inscription + anything else.
- The characters you want to play having a Production profession based on their armour type (Tailoring for Priest/Warlock/Mage, Leatherworking for Druid/Monk/Demon Hunter/Shaman/Hunter, Blacksmithing for Death Knight/Paladin/Warrior, Jewelcrafting for Rings and Neck Legendaries).
You will have to do Torghast on all the characters you want to have a Legendary on to collect Soul Ash, along with Recipes which are Binds on Pickup so they will need to be gotten only on the character you need the Legendary on.
If farming professions is not your thing, sorry for the long-winded reply. I prefer farming materials out myself instead of buying them.

Sounds like you’ve got something to work towards then
The prices of the materials are bound to be big at launch and will calm down later, so if you do have the professions for your own armour type with you then it would be a good idea to make use of them for sure.
Thanks for your answer !
I play with a friend, so I guess he could do Inscription + Herbalism, and I’ll do the rest.
Token price crash incoming.
If you have a profession that isn’t useful to your own legendary you can always make the things for other people’s legendaries and sell them on the AH to make gold
So… is evvery crafting item for legendairy boa or at least not soulbound?
I still dont know this thing, and I dont realyl want to independantly cchange professions per characcter. My main shoould have herba and mining but if i cant make a legendairy for my main because my alt has lw, and I need to gget exclusive mats on my alt for that it would be really bad system imho.
Looking at the tooltips available on websites:
-
Legendary Memories (the item which will have the Legendary effect) are Binds on Pickup/Soulbound.
-
Missives that add secondary stats are none of these.
-
Base armour parts are none of these.
-
Soul Ash is a farmed currency, and from what I have heard there is no Binds on Account cache that can send over an amount to another character.
Bottom line: If you have all professions required across several characters youre all goochie.
200k for a 235 ilevel item? I’ll call that pretty darn cheap. I was expecting to pay that amount for R2. =)
Some ppl, like you, will call that cheap, others, like me, will not.
I don’t have a lot of time to play nor to farm due to work, so 200k is a lot for me, and i’m sure for many others.
And that’s just for ONE legendary. If you want another one for your off-spec, that’s 200k more. Want another one for your alt? 200k more. And so on.
So get an R1 legendary, and upgrade to higher ranks when you can afford it. Unless you’re pushing cutting edge content, you don’t need R4 ASAP.
Chances are, prices will drop considerably as the expansion progresses anyway.
That’s just the vendor costs for leveling it to rank 4. For crafting it’s just 50k, no idea what the other mats prices will be, but 200k is on the lower range imo.
[edit]Actually after looking at it, the initial vendor costs for leveling the skill to craft rank 4 is 1 080 000.
I see. So it will be considerably more expensive to buy early on, but will quickly dwindle down later.
Yes, vendor costs are not that big, but the initial mat prices will be big enough to make it ~1m imo with ~5% profit.
Anything else should be enchanting if you don’t want to buy mats from the AH.
you might use your alts to your advantage and have different professions connected to the main toon your playing. Like having gathering professions on your main to build a supply of income and materials, like herbing and leather, or herbs and ores. Having an alt or two to level just for the professions can be a cost saver as well as an income. I would have one alt with enchanting and the crafting profession of your main, like tailoring, leatherworking or BS. I would say 2 alts and a main is a good way to keep your account somewhat self sufficient and make some gold at the same time. Enchanting is important for the mats for your legendarys as well as a crafting profession to craft it along with the gathering profs on your main to keep a steady supply of materials coming in. You will make 90% of your income in SL the first 4 weeks, after that its just small silver and gold that comes along.
I hear you ppl, and thanks for the advices, but, it’s still 200k for ONE legendary on ONE spec on ONE character. I thought Blizz said SL will be alt friendly? It’s not even multi-spec friendly
Plus, I’m pretty sur we will be able to have 2 or maybe 3 legendaries in the end. So that’s 400-600k for ONE character on ONE spec? I love multi-spec, and I was going to main a druid, because I love playing all their specs, so that will cost me like 800 (the bare minimum) to 1M6-2M4 gold for one character?
Yes I got 2 years to farm this gold, but I don’t see how this expansion will be alt friendly if you want to keep up your gear…
The vendor mat prices got nerfed ~10 times, so it’ll stabilize pretty fast with the bigger supply, maybe somewhere in the 60-100k range.
