Historically speaking, Sulfuras was not upgradable in classic. You got it and then carried it as is for 2 to 3 tiers later.
However, the scenario you mention is exactly what needed to be done with this leggo.

Why do you think you should get it for free? Then what’s the point of trying to get it now, those who spent a lot of time and don’t have legendary at the moment.
Yeah but that can’t work in our current iteration with more drastic seasonal power creep (which is a debate on itself if its a positive or negative) .
Ikr, I mean I’m not sure how many people are actually on board with this because I still remember the whole “Omg why does Steve get to have his lego 1 week before me /gquit” debacle but the current iteration of “conquer the RNG and then spend a small fortune to complete the quest” is a bit overkill.
Is anyone actually advocating for getting it for free? All I’m saying is that it should either be locked behind the RNG or the gold sink, but not both. Ideally it should just be quest that anyone could pick up but should require effort and coordination (meta achievement like) to complete. Also make it upgradable each season.
Also how impactful is that legendary? I started playing my paladin a few weeks ago and managed to compete with a fully BiS-ed 3.1k warrior (10+ ilvl item cap between us). And honestly If I manage to get the drop somehow on my paladin I do plan to sell it (if if works like the Evoker one).
When I got mine it was a 16% DPS increase over my 483 Gorehowl. There isn’t a world where you don’t notice the difference of having Fyr’alath. To put that into numbers, even right now it’s a 14k upgrade for single target and the difference on AoE is crazy.

That was exactly my point. Its absurd. You cant make leggos like they used to be with RNG if you have a seasonal power creep.
Fyralak leggo looks like Thunderfury. You beg to get some RNG drops and then spend a fortune on some items to get it.
The difference being that Thunderfury was used all the way to early tiers of TBC. If I remember correctly, it was replaced by weapons from Karazan.
There is no universe where everyone is happy. But atleast when that was the case we could argue that 1 week is no big deal.
You had tanks that used it in BT still.
Alot of RNG is removed with season 4 also you get the legendary practicelly for free now but u know most players that complain now are people who have just done the raid once or three times. A legendary u need to earn not get for free like NOW

As far as I know, you STILL have to farm it in the raid. You STILL have to do the obnoxious SuperBlooms… and ON TOP you have to do whatever quest you have to do to upgrade the leggo for S4. And then, it will be rank 1/13. So you need to farm even more stuff to get it to max rank.
I dont see where they removed the RNG from it. They just added extra steps. So I would not call that “free”.

15 weeks of clearing HC Fyrakk =/= Getting it for free.

If farming HC raid for 15 weeks is “for free” care to define exactly what we are talking about?
(A) A legendary weapon to give you 15% extra DPS. To use in content and progress in the activities you want.
OR
(B) A legendary transmog that you will use in S4 to show off a fancy new red axe.
Which one of those is it? Cause 15 weeks is a lot.
Especially since in season 4, i’ll only have a shot at Fyrakk every three weeks, i got yet another Fyrakk booger (I’m keeping that name) running LfR this morning, seeing the axe made deterministically upgradeable is kind of a kick in the nadgers, considering i might kill Fyrakk every time he comes around until the end of the expansion and still never get the axe…
