Reason being they instantly delete all immersion and ‘gameify’ the world every time they appear. I just got finished with ‘Loremaster of the Dragon Isles’ and I can’t tell you the story of any chain in the expansion. Why? Because every single time I enter a quest area, that quest area is also a world quest area. So if I’m questing with characters A B and C, I now have a duplicate of that character talking to me via a talking head pop up, or an entirely different character D doing it instead.
When it isn’t a talking head world quest, its Malicia telling me that there is a bounty target who I can’t kill, because they’re my faction, meaning the interaction is literally worthless. When it isn’t that, its Fyrakk shouting at me. When it isn’t that, its a rare now being empowered by the Dreamsurge.
With all the irritation above, its no surprise that a lot of us opt to just play with no game sound on at all, which means immersion is close to impossible.
If you ever wondered why Vanilla hits different and just feels 5000x more immersive despite there being not much to it - its this reason why. You aren’t allowed to quest in peace. By far my favourite part of a new expansion used to be sitting for a week and a half and doing Loremaster for the new expansion. This stopped in Legion once the talking heads appeared and you stopped being able to ‘finish’ areas. Put it this way - if WoTLK released tomorrow, The Wrathgate would be a world quest area and every time you flew to ICC, Saurfang the Younger would pop up via talking head and tell you:
‘Champion, let it be finished! Clear out the scourge so that we may advance! Lok’tar O’gar!’
every single day for the next 15 years. It would take that moment in the game and make it into this irritation that no one could enjoy. “Less is more.”
Anyways, I went and downloaded an addon called ‘BeQuiet’ - BeQuiet shuts up the talking head pop-ups. Fantastic. But it doesn’t turn off the World Quests themselves or the other pop ups like the Dreamsurge stuff. You ever been trying to do a quest in Shadowlands or BFA or Dragonflight and realised half way through it, you aren’t actually doing the quest, you’re doing some world quest by mistake? This is what I’m talking about - its total information overload, and 95% of it is useless.
What is the story of Azure Span? Can anyone tell me? I literally completed it yesterday and I have no idea. I know that I went to some ice palace and a forest and a lake. I know that Grumbletrunk was empowered by the Dreamsurge, I know that Soup was ready. I know that it was a great day for a race, but I don’t know what the actual story was, because i don’t even know what was an actual quest and what was worthless world quest text.
Like, guys, i’m 700 feet in the air flying on my dragon. How do you know i’m above a lake and how do you know that it needs clearing out? WHERE EVEN ARE YOU? Are you in an IDF drone watching me/us?
TL;DR: Give me an option to declutter the game.
- Toggle off World Quests in their entirety
- Toggle off Talking Heads in their entirety
- Toggle off yellow text prompts like Dreamsurge stuff
- Toggle off Fyrakk coming through and cooking the zone when I killed him 6 months ago.
