I have lots to say regards to the story for the last 2-3 expansions. But I will put it fast blunt and easy. Let Metzen cook. He made the story for this world. Dont hinder or put obstacles for him. Let him tell the story. He came back to wrap up the story since WC. Let him do that.
It cannot get worse tbh. Maybe 11.2 will have some good story, but the whole TWW has been “meh” so far (what happened to the Harronir btw. cough cough).
I would, I just hope blizzard will.
It’s not how Blizzard is writting it seems. They are in a sort of “democratic” writting team. Something I find stupid because having no clear leader with a global idea about what to do just means we are ending with stories that have difficulties to make sense and no clear tone.
The writing is way better in 11.2, and I don’t just mean the story. The language itself has improved too. Characters are behaving more organically now. It’s a quality increase. Wonder, whether they keep this up for 11.2.x patches
I won’t let Metzen cook no. He is a MHP at heart that means all my favorite races(Orcs and blood elves) will be shafted. After all he was the one to make the call to kill Kael’thas.
I am hoping that wow gets atleast bit better and lore too but sametime i wouldnt put as much weight in trust on metzen, he is basically an charismatic company voice, his writing choices have been always bit iffy
There’s that and the interview where he says the writing for the game has been “democratized”.
In other words, don’t count much on improvements. From what I’ve seen with 11.2 and the last cinematic, it’s yet again more of the same.
They replaced Sylvanas the Mary-Sue with her sister, since her character got butchered beyond redemption and many dislike her.
They still go with the same overused “kill big bad, oh new big bad !!!”. At least I’ll give them that Xa’latath has been a bit built up but it really pales in comparison to other MMOs or story driven games.
There is hardly any showcase of the villains motivations. 99% of the time it boils down to I’m strong and I’ll destroy everything… er okay ? How can you make compeling villains if they are all the same cheesy concept ?
You can’t come with the excuses that MMOs can’t tell a good story, that’s simply false.
Remember how the burning legion tried to corrupt single mortals to enter the world ?
Remember How the same burning legion had to bring in orcs , because they had to weaken the humans ? It took years of war and they still couldn’t do it .
Remember how the Lich Kind and Kelthuzad slowly spread plague , and corrupted a price and it’s population , to take down a kingdom ?
Remember how Onixia and Nefarian spread machinations to slowly subvert and ruin a kingdom from the inside ?
You know villains who were STRONG , but still needed time and preparation , because taking down a single kingdom was a tough job , let alone ruin the entire world .
And than came Deathwing with the big RAAAAAWRRRRR . And all villains after that were basically “Pft destroy the world . I did that yesterday on 2 different planets . You are all nothing and I am so bad that I will destroy the entire reality and this plane of existence as we know it.” Cartoon villains and boring story …
That’s one side of the issue. But not every story would have to be about the villains. With fleshed-out characters that the audience is invested in, you can have conflict and drama even without any clear villain. But on that front we’re even worse off, which is why every new patch is just a crisis we are following a villain into, instead of a place any part of our group actually wanted to visit for reasons of their own. And let’s not get started on how much of a non-entity in its own story the player character itself is…
Bad villains wouldn’t be so bad, if they weren’t everything that’s holding the plot together.
