Let's talk about those collector's editions

Let nobody say I don’t care or am saying this simply because I want to make fun of people who spend the extra money on collector’s editions, however…

I’ve ordered the new ones for the sake of collection but I’m considering cancelling it for several reasons.

These collector’s editions are getting a little thin - physically I mean, the virtual goodies are… well, more than enough. I’d actually like it if there were less digital goodies. 5 pins and a mousepad, and an art book which I sincerely hope is better than Shadowland’s, and that’s literally it.

You couldn’t come up with anything a little better? The pins destroy my clothes so I don’t want to use them. How about a little toy, a card game, a behind-the-scenes BluRay, maybe a USB stick with the soundtrack on maybe? The C&C collector’s edition had a live recording of 2 hours from Frank Klepacki and “The Tiberian Sons” on it and the USB stick looks like a tiberium crystal inserted into a crystal pod. It’s also got a Tesla coil and a few other things.

And then, almost as if to spite me, the digital goodies are not unlocked until I get the key, and the key is in the box - the digital goodies including access to the expansion itself - so the game might come out and I can’t play it because I didn’t get the box in time. If I buy it from your own store can you please make sure that’s not a problem? I imagine people who buy collector’s editions want to play on day 1 - just a guess though.

Like the Shadowland’s collectors edition it feels rather… thin, honestly. Can we maybe up the effort a little bit next time? Or, ideally, this time?

Wow awesome set :+1:
I used to collect them, then stopped and do feel for you regarding the digital key, was hearing how people are having to buy one of the other sets and navigate trying to get a partial refund - so off putting buying them…

I stopped buying them after Legion. Prior to that I collected them, also for Diablo and StarCraft.

The whole hassle with having a physical product you have to wait for versus some digital keys that you can instantly redeem is a mess, and I can’t be bothered with it.

And the stuff you get has gotten increasingly lame, I think. Maybe it’s because I don’t see the appeal of pins, but it feels a bit like you’re just paying for a fancy box and an art book.

I used to really appreciate the behind-the-scenes DVD. Then they stopped with those. Weird.

Plus there’s the fact that everything is so digital these days, so I have long since stuffed my collection of games and DVDs and CDs into boxes and stored them away, most likely forever.

I guess Blizzard finds themselves having to commit to continuing the trend that they established, but not really wanting to, so they do the least they have to.

I also don’t think the more recent boxes look so good. The first 5 have a certain color design that is homogenous. And then the design starts to get a bit wild. It’s not Simpsons Season 6 box dumb, but it’s not Donald Duck magazine perfection either.

It costs the equivalent of a good meal out, and an evening of drinking. I don’t see where the problem is tbh

The problem is that a good meal out and drinks is better value. There’s practically nothing in it! At least the meal out has good food and drink.

Playing a game for hundreds of hours, if not thousands is better value than one night of drinking? You high af

I get without buying the CE, you know.

You get the game, and goodies, physical stuff that lasts. I don’t see the problem here. If you don’t want the goodies, don’t buy it. But saying that a night out is better than hundreds of hours and a physical CE imo is ridiculous.

People are so hung up, it’s painful

Alright, let me explain it so a 5-year old can understand it.

Take everything that the base edition contains out of the discussion. I get that regardless. Then subtract the price of the base edition from the price of the collector’s edition. It’s €35 of shipping plus €130 for the product itself. That’s €165. The base edition is €50 - so the extra price I pay for the collector’s edition is €115, and for this I get a book, a mediocre mousepad, and some pins.

Now, I can of course choose not to buy it, but here’s the thing: This isn’t about my personal finances, which besides being fine is not your business, but rather a criticism of Blizzard’s value proposition.

Rating a product poorly does not mean you’re out of cash.

All I’m saying is it’s a bad product. That’s it. Forget my finances. Not difficult.

That’s how collecting gets you. You’ll buy stuff that you think is garbage because it’s necessary for your collection.

It’s like super FOMO. I stopped collecting a few years ago, I just buy stuff I really want.

That said, I am very cheap so I consider eating in a restaurant a waste of money. I’d just eat a cheese roll and get the CE.

Is this the time and place to type 800% the value?

Well… it’s not exactly Diablo Immortal.

But sure, I guess it’s time. ;D

Nice collection! I’ve got 3 WoW CEs: Vanilla, TBC, and Shadowlands. I took a long break shortly after Wrath, that’s why I have that huge gap.

I agree that a lot of the stuff in the CEs is junk. Those pins are useless. The mousepads are a nice idea, but as a gamer, I want a high-quality surface, not something mediocre. The Vanilla CE has a “behind the scenes” DVD which was really good.

The only thing in the current CEs I really like are the art books. But paying an extra €67 (€130 - €50 - €13 for a month of WoW time) over the basic edition just for that isn’t worth it.

Complete collection will worth tons of money in 30 years time.

Actualy, you have to subtract the Epic Edition, as that is the version you are getting. Which is €89.99. But agree, the collector’s edition are bad. Blizzard doesn’t care anymore and they haven’t done for quite some time now. It’s about milking the players. It’s an expanion focusing on dragons. Why not a little dragon figurine

Well… there’s really only been one before this one that was bad, which is incidentally Shadowlands. The 15 year anniversary one was downright stunning, and the BfA one wasn’t particularly bad either.

Once is a fluke, twice is a pattern.

Anyway, you’re right about that, of course, although I do feel that these ingame goodies are just kindda… eh, idk. I don’t like paying for transmogs, see, and … well, I guess it was cool when we had like 10 of them in the game, but now we’re well over a thousand of mounts+pets so it’s kindda losing its luster. Kindda like how 151 pokemon is awesome but idk 860 something I don’t even know how many at this point is not.

EDIT: And yeah, a dragon figurine to assemble would’ve been sick. Great idea. Most of the elements can be laid flat inside the box to be assembled after opening, and it doesn’t have to be particularly big. Just something to place on my desk while I play and then add to the collection afterwards.

shadowlands gave blizzard a reputation of “doing less, earning more”. i bet DF would be worse.
blizzard is using drug dealer’s tactic. give a sample, then make you an addict, then bump the price. while giving smaller doses.

I would never get collectors edition. I don’t like clutter irl.
