Leveling now outstrips gear progression for alts and new characters

I actually first encountered this waaaaay back before Chromie Time. I levelled a warlock by rinsing every zone, and by the time I finished Northrend I was five levels ahead of the gear I was being given. I was promptly funneled into the Pandaria quest chain (skipping an entire expansion without realising it) and murdered over and over by the trash mobs skulking around Stormwind.

Chromie Time has introduced a variation of the same problem. All the guides say to level via Warlords of Draenor because of the huge XP boosts from bonus quests - and it works! Trouble is, my 60 Death Knight landed on the Dragon Isles with an ILVL of 110.

If you’ve played Elden Ring, you’ll know what I’m talking about.

Fortunately he’s an alt, and I have other characters with blacksmithing and the like, so I was able to kit him out with three decent bits of armour and a weapon once he’d toughed it out to 61. This more than doubled his health and damage, which made a noticeable difference to his rate of progress.

What I’m imagining, though, is some kind of post-expansion quest to replace the one that helps people prep for the new expansion (the elemental storms pre-Dragonflight) that awards a slightly lesser but still relevant set of gear for characters arriving at base camp after leveling through Chromie time. Because right now it’s rough unless you have a support system in place.

Well, I’ll probably notice this problem with my rogue if she hits 60 - all my other alts I geared up with 252 gear from prepatch as the currency was so easy to earn.

If it helps, there are green boe’s on AH, lvl 60 ilvl 200, and they usually go for a low price I think. You could spend a few bucks on this maybe, as well as profession gear. Only a level later, you can equip those and they are 300+.

Otherwise agree, the power creep is just huge.

There’s the 226 ilvl anima catch-up gear tokens in Zereth Mortis @ 500 anima a piece for armour and there’s weapons, trinks etc too.

Now imagine you’re a new player, and after you finish BfA you’re on your own.

No wonder this game is hemorrhaging subscriptions while not taking in any new blood.

I don’t know why the devs seem to be so fixated on designing the game around a handful of people.
You’'d think that it would ring a bell that a new player’s first sight of the game would be more important than a veteran’s.

That’s why I have max level heirlooms. Sure they only go to ilvl 183 right now, but it opens a world of possibilities when it comes to leveling, especially if you prefer a route that doesn’t give you gear.

Why didn’t you solo the raids and dungeons in WoD and get yourself 146 purple stuff on every slot. Also wait till 61 to go to Dragonflight and get the early crafted set. on four slots, AH or busy yourself a level and do them yourself. You won’t need anything else. You can one shot everything in WoD post 45. Aso flying between dungeons do the world mobs etc. Easy peasy. You can get to 96 just doing classic dungeons on your own at 35 and one shotting everything. Doing the raid in Shadowmoon Temple of Karabor solo will literally fill your bag with purples. Sell everything else to get the gold to buy your 61 crafted. If its the same as Surveyors for the mage.

I never use Chromie like ever. I like one shotting stuff, its faster.

You really want them to design their newest and latest expansion around completely new players with a few hours of playtime? So basically quest mobs in the newest expansion should have 1k hp and do no damage, and be designed around the fact that you might have around 110 iLvl. Do you realize how bored literally everyone else would be? You could just set up some sort of macro that attacks anything in range, blindfold yourself, and reach level 70 without ever seeing your screen.

Also, how can a game simultaneously be catered to its veterans, which you claim it is hemorrhaging subscriptions from, while also not getting any new blood? How would catering it to new players stop the hemorrhaging of veterans if that’s already occurring while the game is catered to them? Also where did you see the statistics for it hemorrhaging subscribers?
