By the way the name ( Ragnaros ) seems available to get in several realms.

Best example would be a player on my german realm called “Yrel” and also running around with the exact same gear as Draenei.

Names under copyright have always been against the TOS, Blizz just never enforced it. Guess they are starting now.

I don’t know how but there is someone who has that name in an NA server even though it is restricted.

I think they restrict npc names because if people use certain macros or /target, There is a chance they will target the player instead, no?

The thing is, you can get npc names but only some of them are restricted. I certainly do not know why.

I think it boils down to whether the name is/can be copyrighted Some names, Blizz will not be able to copyright because either a) someone else used it first, or b) It is an actual name, and you can’t stop people using their own names!
Obviously this applies more to human characters, than say, orcs, because very few people are probably called things like Garrosh and Mankrik in real life…

For example on a whim I just searched John J Keeshan. Turns out there are quite a lot of them…Mostly of Irish descent. Not just that loon from Redridge…

Sometimes they just won’t bother to Copyright a name because there’s no real point to it, and whilst to a big business the cost is tiny, it does still cost to do so, which means somebody has to put in the hours getting it all done, chasing out extent copyright requests, handling payments, etc etc.

Far better to just copyright the big names and not give a monkeys about the others.

There is one guy on Frostmourne-NA who has the name Arthas.

It’s quite meaningless why these names are restricted. I hope they would allow us to use them.
