I’m looking for a guild that’s been around for a long time. I myself have converted into a casual style of playing since I’m becoming a dad soon and I’ve always wanted to try roleplaying.
I’m 35 years old, my experience in roleplaying is very small but my experience overall of the game is vast.
Id love to have a chat with someone who finds this interesting. As mentioned I’m looking for a guild who’s been around for +10 years and is still going strong.
Hope you’re having an awesome weekend!
PS. Haven’t decided what class/race to level yet so all bets are open!
Hey! It might be difficult to find many roleplay guilds that have been around for over a decade and are still active. Perhaps it’d be helpful if you described what it is about old guilds that appeals to you in particular? You might be surprised to get the same benefits from a guild that is younger but well-established.
I think this unfortunately might be very difficult to find. While there might be some, you have to understand that RP on guild level often requires level of effort that is much higher than in other styles of gameplay. The GMs and officers often do RP events (which can in terms of preparation and effort put in be on similar level as session of DnD), collaboration with guilds, community participation and take care of issues that are not just about personal drama or conflicts about loot, but rather about something that is creative outlet of people with all the engagement, passion and (sometimes) obsession that might be tied to it.
On top of that, where raiding/M+/PvP/casual guilds have content given for them and as such can be centered around enjoying something that is given to them, RP guilds need to create the content themselves, which leads to higher burnout among the officers.
What I´m trying to say is that 10+ years is something borderline impossible for a guild and even guilds that in theory achieve such longevity (or are in a state where I have no doubt they will achieve it eventually, they just haven´t been around for long enough) often do so by pretty much ceasing to exist as an in-game guild and rather existing as a community of old friends that can spend years being inactive in the actual game. You might not even be able to get to those guilds because at this point, they won’t take new members due to being a group of friends who have known each other for a looooooong time and have no interest in getting new people into the group. Because, unlike in other parts of this game, there is no minimal number of players needed for RP and as such, you don’t need to find that 5th or 10th player, you will just stay at 4 or 9.
But, I understand your wish to be part of something that gives you certain guarantee of longevity, where you don´t have to put in the time and energy to find something new every few months. However, you simply can’t guarantee something like that in this hobby. I once joined a guild that was founded two weeks prior to my joining. That guild is still going strong years later. I also joined a guild that was years old and it started dying a slow death half a year after I joined. There were also guilds that changed after a GM stepped down, so much that they became unrecognizable, simply because the new GM’s vision was completely different than the old one’s. I´ve once seen a guild that existed for literally years before that getting transformed to an insane degree because a new player came in just at the time when the real life of one of the two GMs got busy and by the time he was able to come back, the player became very close with the other GM. There unfortunately just isn’t a guarantee. You will be taking a leap of faith no matter what you choose.
So, I’d rather focus on what interests you. What race? What class? Do you want more DnD-like experience or just casual RP? If you want events and such, do you want them to be more mechanical, with rules about rolls and such, or do you want it to be more freeform? Are you interested in RP-PvP? And so on, and so on. Plenty of questions, but answering them might find you what you enjoy so you get the most out of this hobby.
Hey and thanks for your reply! You are absolutely right that I would like some kind of guarantee but I guess thats hard in the RP scene. I was thinking more of a casual RP events maybe with some PVP included, nothing hardcore.
For class and race im leaning towards Mag’har Orc Rogue
There are plenty of great and well established guilds out there of varying flavour that will give you exactly what you’re after. There’s something for everyone.
Just find yourself a decent group of folks and whether the group has been around for a year or ten won’t matter.
Yeah, it unfortunately comes with the hobby. It´s like groups for DnD, you probably wouldn´t find one that has been going on for a decade that is still searching for new people since at that point, they really don´t need them.
Now, there are guilds for casual RP (speaking stuff such as RPing civilians in main hubs, visiting markets or running a market stall, that sort of stuff), most often right within those hubs. If we´re talking Horde side, as you mentioned the Mag´har, you might be able to find something either in weekly market event place in Dawn´s Blossom in Pandaria, they´ve got market going there every Tuesday.
Alliance has more options, as Horde RP is less hub-oriented and more focused on guilds, which however won´t be that much of a problem since you are after a guild. There´s a Horde discord, although I´m not in it so can´t send you a link. From what I´ve heard, it´s the most likely place where you will be able to meet plenty of people from Horde scene and see if there is a guild that you might fancy.
Now, for RP-PvP, there´s Warsworn Discord:
The forum thread is locked, but the link there should work and the Discord is quite active.
However, there´s a disclaimer I have to put here, and that goes for RP-PvP specifically and RP in general, as there´s a very common misconception people outside of RP or new to it have: RP doesn´t mean playing the game while acting as if you are a person in Azeroth.
Now, there´s nothing wrong with it nor people who RP that way, however it´s not something that RPers on this server mean when they use the word “roleplaying”. Rather, RP on this server is about creating a character, their story and interacting with other people/characters almost entirely outside of the scope of WoW´s gameplay.
It is important to understand that when you´re joining RP guild or a community, you´re not joining group of people who log in to the game and go run a dungeon or form arena team together. Some people within the guild might do that on the off hours, but it´s not the focus of the guild and even if people do it, it´s understood that the act of doing content together is not RP. There´s what we do Out Of Character (OOC) and what we do In Character (IC).
OOC Syelia has ran level 8 Delves, killed Ansurek and Gallywix, and got 1600 rating fighting random people in arenas and Horde in BGs. IC, she has been with Kirin Tor for a year, has not fought the Horde and instead of epically beating up nerubian queen spent the time after Dalaran fell riddled with survivor guilt (and not so epically beating up random nerubians).
The reason why I´m saying all this is to make sure you know what you´re getting into and don´t end up in a situation where you join the guild filled with excitement because you´re going to play the game with your guildies and get more connected to the world of this game by pretending that it´s not you behind the computer beating up a fat goblin, but rather your orc rogue who really likes to stab rich fat goblins.
Instead you will be put into a community where you will get to play part of a single character in a story that is actively being created by the other people in the community. I´d say it´s far better than the first option, but I´m still writing all this as a warning so you don´t enter the community with completely wrong expectations of what the activity you´re asking about is.
