Looking for Help to find a fitting RP Class

Hi so i was just recently leveling my Human Death Knight through Shadowlands and started thinking to myself “Damn…this charakter looks pretty good. Why is there no Class that looks simular to this in Roleplay that is not an undead murder machine.”

But then i figured i might just ask some other people in case i forget something. Is there a class that looks simular? Like sure the whole undead theme would not be used but are there classes that use enchanted Weapons/Rune Weapons to fight with? Like for example could a Spellblade/Battle Mage use two Handed weapons and focus on melee?

I also heared something about the first generation of Death Knights not beeing undead but only Knights that use shadow magic but i’m not so sure about the lore in that area.

Long story short: I’m looking for a class that can use the nice Looking Armor/Weapons the Death knight class has to offer for RP without playing an Undead monster since i’m realy bad at playing charakters without any emotions to them.

Can’t think of something against spellblade/battle-mage like that, yes. We know the Horde elves have them (with Among examples the Nightborne boss in Nighthold, I forgot her name) and it’s not a huge stretch to think Dalaran could have a few (though their battle-mages seem more staff than sword, but does it matter?)
It depends of the race ultimately I’d say, but it’s not an absurd concept.

Yeah i imagined something like that. The only issue i had with those that i wasnt sure if it would fit to a human and the second thing was that they all seemed to use light armor but i gues you could make a more magic juggernaut work. At least i didnt find anything in the lore that would speak against a Mage wearing heavy armor.

Battlemages are very canon, in humans as well! There’s nothing stopping a mage of any race from deciding to forsake the ease of a robe for the bulk of armour. You can portray it with any class, really; there are some bulky looking cloth sets out there (try mix and matching the Uldir sets), but you can equally use a warrior or paladin or any other class, because your OOC class only impacts your RP in regards to what you can wear.

Yeah exactly. thats the origin of my question. I wanted to find a class that can use my DKs stuff in RP without beeing…yeah a DK. And the only class i could come up with that uses runeblades would be a mage just…arcane runes not shadow runes.

Yep, go for it dude. Could use a monk too - they’re sometimes portrayed as runemasters in some cultures (tauren, blood elves).

Ouh i played a runemaster before but i figured they don’t realy fitt since they usually are light armored and fight unarmed :o

Monk works best for Runemaster

As for your DK, Spellblade could probably work, only issue I could think of would be the glowing eyes. they kind of stand out. Arcane vision?

When you say you like the DK aesthetic, do you mean just the idea of a plate wearing soldier with a magic word or specifically some of the black painted skull and bones armour sets the DKs get?

The first^^

I’m not normally one to peruse the forums (as my post-count will undoubtedly show!) - but I’m all about helping folks out in finding a concept they like. So here goes.

I’m going to have to plop down two very different answers in this case, because according to your first post, you seemed enticed by the dark armors, runic abilities and overall “death vibe” of Death Knights - but perturbed by playing an emotionless killing machine.

So… first idea from my odds-and-ends brain;

And in that case, might I suggest a concept - although highly unusual - of a living human necromancer, perhaps a warrior before some sort of situation caused them to dapple in the dark arts. One who prefers to still get in, close and heavy with armor and a giant sword to dish out their hatred, revenge, whichever. Enchanting their blades and armor with necromantic runes of Death and Shadow.

Thusly, you avoid the emotionless killing machine in favor for a living individual with a troubled past. Granted, you’d have some troubles getting into actual hubs without hiding what you dapple in; Necromancy being one of those “Big No No”'s after all.

But as for your later post regarding just well… Plate and bulky armors; second option! Let’s go!

Most definitely a thing in lore, although notoriously ‘elven’ in most cases; there in fact exist such a thing as that; Battle Mages. from groups such as; the Silver Covenant, the Sunreavers, Baradin’s Wardens, 7’th Legion, the Kirin Tor and many more. These mages are often more heavily armored than their more ranged counterparts and utilizes swords and staves (the majority).

Battle Mages, Spellblades and let’s not forget Spellbreakers! Now there are plenty of ways you could ‘say’ your character was trained, raised or had of relations that could lead them to being either of these. A neutral fellow in Dalaran for example. Friends in odd circles - the list goes on.

But you could also tread the path less traveled and find another RP’er to train your character in these things. It makes for remarkable storytelling and a wonderful narrative setting that can just really take off in all the right ways.

So whether you go for a necromancer in bulky armor (a bit unconventional) - or the tried and true Battle Mage of the Kirin Tor - or even Runemaster - I’m going to always advocate for finding RP to entice you further onto a path you can enjoy.

Here’s a few nifty things. First of which; Spellblade Aluriel. From the Adventure Journal;

Aluriel always had an affinity for magic. She rose through the ranks of the Nightguard effortlessly, having a natural talent with the sword. But no matter how strong she became, she wanted more. She studied with the mages at the University of Suramar, spending her days in combat training and her evenings in the artificery. She forged her weapons and armor in the Nightwell, weaving magic spells into the precious metals. She is the first Spellblade, adept in the schools of Fire, Frost and Arcane.

Rune magic; https://wow.gamepedia.com/Rune_magic

And now; apologies for the word-vomit, but I hope it helps. Have fun out there!

Thanks for the replie. I was definetly talking about the visual apearance not the abilitys from the beginning. I know that the class’s would have been a bit problematic that’s why I left that away from the getgo. But I will think over it and then decide how I will introduce it to my Charakter.

The first death knights were orcish warlocks possessing the bodies of human knights, to answer that mystery.

Also re: mages in armor, there are some few info snippets which imply that heavy armor does hinder them in some way. General concensus to my knowledge is that it probably stifles, though far from fully halts, the flow of magic somewhat, and also makes any spellcasting gestures more difficult to do accurately. This in turn would make well armored spellblades rely on swifter, less heavy hitting spells.

Keywords being general concencus. It’s build on some small foundation of lore, but like 90% of what I just wrote is interpretation.

If you do pursue this avenue i’d recommend rolling a Warrior for these purposes rather than a Death Knight, the eyes are far too iconic of DKs.

Okey thanks. I probably will still use a deathknight and either just play a High Elf or look for a different explenation for glowing eyes since Warrior Armor looks boring and also because i have this internal tick that my RP charakter also needs to be my main OOC. I know it doesnt have to but i just prever it this way.

There are plenty of ways to explain glowing eyes - and again, I’d definitely say go for it in a developing narrative; it makes it so much more worth it in the long run.

In general, many glowing eyes are a side effect for this or that usage of magic. However; mostly within elves. Magic addiction and what have you.

But even humans can be affected by magic and high exposure. While not an eye-glow, take Jaina for an example. After Theramore, the exposure to the ridiculous amount of magic caused part of her hair to turn white.

While lore on humans and arcane exposure is limited, I doubt it’d be too much of a stretch for your character to have come under immense arcane exposure in a short period of time that changed his physiology to this extent.

Of course, in general I’d also recommend going for another plate wearer, simply as Tehya states above; the blue glowing eyes are so iconic. And the Arcane would likely either give colorations of pure white, magentas or purples.

That being said; go for it and have some fun. So long as you have some proper arguments and reasons for why your character looks or acts as they do, you can pull off quite a few things. Concepts my man, make sure they work!

In addition to all the suggestions people brought up so far, let me present another one: Paladins.

Paladins go into battle wearing heavy plate armour and often end up using magical weapons: enchanted swords or blessed hammers for example. They mix in a bit of magic in their fighting style. Mostly holy, but I think it wouldn’t be weird for a human or an elf to throw in some arcane as well. Combat wise they’re quite versatile and there’s always the chance for the character to develop some skills in healing as well.

Concept wise the classical paladin does tend to fall on the good and righteous side but there are enough examples in lore to support more morally questionable paladins. They can be darker, as long as you explain well how that happened to them.

So summed up, give it a thought as well. There’s a lot of concept possible with the few things you listed so give it a good thought.

Ouh no thank you. I actually think paladins are rather boring but thats just my experience with people who play them basicly play knights with sparkle effects to there weapon.

The ‘Not a DK IC’ is sadly very commonly used.

If you want to consider a warrior that uses magic, you can do that. All you need to do is farm for a few trinkets to enhance your RP with by using their effects. A few old school raids and dungeons have numerous items that can allow you to do a ‘magic’ effect.

Then, just balance it out so you aren’t just a ‘mage who wears plate’, and you should be able to make a concept that works.

Here are some items that could help you:

In addition, there are also toys and other consumables that allow you to do other effects. For example, ‘Prismatic lens’ allows you to fire a beam at your target.

It is very easy to just roll a death knight and go ‘not a DK’. But farming a few trinkets, toys and other consumables can really make you appreciate the effort you put in to make what you are looking for.
