Looking for pointers and tips^^

Good afternoon!

So, with the release of basic classes for Dracthyr, I figured I’d give Rogue a proper shot after all these years. I am currently mid-ways levelling the fella, spamming dungeons, running Outlaw with some friends. So far I’m really enjoying it, but only thematically. I feel like i don’t perform well at all in dungeons. I’ve played the game for far too many years, I know my way around the game, how it all works, so my issue lands on the class, which I want to learn!

I am a fairly casual player, not aiming to do the hardest content when I get to the end, but I will be focusing PvE content such as T8 delves, world content and eventually norm/hc raids down the road. However, my struggles with the class is basically playing it right, or at least good enough to be on par in dungeons and such.

Things I find tricky to figure out is:

  • What spec is the better for the content I prefer (ST and AOE)
  • Energy based classes, how to manage the constant thirst for energy, not being able to keep damage flowing. Feels like there’s a lot of down-time and waiting for energy or CDs, auto-attacking for a big fraction of fights.
  • When to properly use CDs, spenders and such like, as if you (like me) happen to click the wrong thing, you’re punished fairly hard, where your damage could potentially take a hit.
  • ADDONS: Any addons to help keep track on things that isn’t WeakAura (cluttered, can cause fps/ms lags)
  • No proper guides for the average joe like myself as their mostly focused on HC/M raids, higher M+ keys or PvP. Therefor wanting to ask the Rogues in the community.

(I am aware that the energy issue could be helped with certain talents and such down the road, but still open to tips and tricks on that part)

I absolutely love rogues, the theme of the class and specs, same as feral. But I somehow can’t wrap my head around energy-based classes, but willing to learn.

Edited: spell-check lol

I will try to help and give my 2 cents. Please be aware this is from an outlaw rogue perspective.

Assassination is generally stronger in both single target and aoe (when more than 5) but is more gear dependent than outlaw.

Outlaw doesnt really get good aoe while leveling until you unlock blade flurry and killing spree. Afterwards you will delete packs every minute with that combo.

In terms of downtime, unfortunately this is the nature of energy based specs. While at max level it is mitigated to a certain degree, there will be points where you are energy starved.

For outlaw specifically, the flow heavily relies on uptime of adrenaline rush, your passive restless blades, possible true baring roll on roll the bones, ace up your sleeve procs, crackshot all to reduce the cd of adrenaline rush to keep the spec moving, and thistle tea helps with energy starvation. (Mastery has been hot garbage for outlaw since its inception with the exception of “troll builds”)

Because of the natural cooldown reduction you get from restless blades and true baring, you are not punished too heavy for fat fingering buttons with the following exceptions.

  • Using killing spree at the wrong time can land you in hot water.
  • Vanishing before subterfuge has worn off can drop your dps significantly so that is something to keep an eye on.
  • Way over capping combos can hurt, and missing ace up your sleeve procs.
  • Using vanish without Adrenaline rush also hurts (at max level with crackshot) due to Adrenaline rush reducing your GCD to .8 seconds.

Dont be afraid to use AR on trash packs, restless blades is only good if you have something for it to work on. Ive seen alot of outlaw rogues struggle because they hold it and only use it on bosses. (This is more of a tip at higher levels)

As for end game content, outlaw finds delves very easy using the 1 hour tricks you get from the trickster talant tree. Zekvir is made alot easier by using killing spree to remove his dot.
They perform pretty well in m+ and raid but will often come middle of the pack even with optimal play.

Overall it is a pretty decent spec atm, however I do have my personal issues with it.

Biggest downsides is the energy regen when you fall into that slump of 0 procs and AR on cd. It is also extremely reliant on stealth/vanish for “burst” which can be an issue when solo.

As for addons, WA is the main one. Apologies but i cannot suggest any other although other rogues may have decent suggestions.

This is all opinion based from my pov

I can expand further if you need but im short on time atm

If you’re running outlaw, stick with HO and aim for 8-10% haste unbuffed.
Trickster is pretty underrated in M+. It gets a bad rap because of Killing Spree but once you get an idea of when it’s safe to use, I found the spec to be pretty solid. For raids, I’d stick with the HO/FB build. Higher single target than trickster anyway.

Consider KiR once you’re able to play around with your gear and comfortably hit 18-20% unbuffed, as this spec is the strongest build right now. You can use haste pots for about an extra 4%.
