Looking for some tips, for this returning rusty Mage RP'er

Maybe these are stupid questions, but I have been pondering all day, looking through guides and lore, old posts and new posts and my head is bursting by now  so now I turn to the forums, to get your guys perspective.

I have been away from AD server and RP since MoP so I am super rusty, I just really want to get this right. I want to RP as my Worgen here because it is my fav race, and as a mage because it is my fav class. Last time I RP’ed a mage I was a princess’y Bloodelf with a Celestial steed and an attitude to match Johnny Awesome, so I need help

I want my Worgen to have a huge affinity towards books and studies, and to be a scolar of the Arcane, and was thinking of maybe she -till now- had focused on the art of Portals or something? But is that too… flat?
I would really like to start my RP jurney on a learning path, rather than a fully trained Gilnean Mage from start.
Of cause it is too late to play the “straight out of Gilneas” arch, but still I would like to play through “learning and get approved from Dalaran”, maybe learn about demons and safety from a warlock, as the arcane arts have a risk of drawing their attention, maybe have sessions from a Shaman teaching more about the elements, aswel.

Is that even possible in today’s RP scene, or should I just write it all as her background, as to justyfying why she is not just a “Hedge Wizard” but approved through studies in Dalaran?

Could I turn the arch to that she haven’t trained further since her lessons in Gilneas, relying on enchanted staves and jewelery to boost her weak magic, and risking them exploding (for all to see) when she attempts using magic, without breaking lore and immersion? Would anybody even care and report her, and perhaps send her to where ever mages get educated now, to make sure that she’s not a hazard as a rogue untrained wizard?

Another option I had thought of was just having her be fullt trained, and be something like Elise Starseeker, who travels the world, maps it out, studies culture and explore it’s secrets and magic and eventually settles as a lore/magic teacher, perhaps expedition leader. but I also think it would perhaps be rather boring.

And for the Worgen part: Does a cursed gilnean utilize their form when performing magic IC? Are they always in Worgen form… or never? Does the worgen form randomly pop up when they get mad over the fact that their 225th staff just splintered because they failed their spell, and now not only have to remake the enchant but also need to find a new stick for a staff?

Maybe I am overthinking it all :grimacing:  I just really want it to work, without being an overpowered mage. I want her flawed and to create funny moments for those I potentially RP with, I want her to get in trouble and develope through RP - But without making people roll their eyes  or feel that I break lore or immersion.

For one, I know a lot of roleplayers dislikes the “apprentice seeking mentor” kinda thing, I really love it though, because I learn so much about RP in that process as well.

Anywaays, I am blabbering. Would any of the above work in RP? What would be the best/safest be for fitting in various types of RP?

Thank you for taking the time to read my wall of text

I’m the last person to offer any advice or idea to the current state of things or how a concept might be recieved, so I’ll avoid throwing in my opinion on that end of things, but I just wanted to say -

she haven’t trained further since her lessons in Gilneas, relying on enchanted staves and jewelery to boost her weak magic, and risking them exploding (for all to see) when she attempts using magic

I really love this idea, it’s charming and fun! I don’t see anything lore-breaking or immersion affecting from it either.

Whatever you end up going for in the end, I just want to say that I really like the concepts you’re rolling around right now.

Not at all! Portals are a great tool of convenience, just being able to get one person (or a group of people) from one side of the planet to the other simply by walking through a doorway is the sort of thing that would always be welcomed from an in-character perspective.

I think that depends on who you RP her around! Other mages might go “hang on, that’s a bit dangerous, you should probably seek out a mentor” but to Joe the baker or Tim the warrior, they’d probably look at that and go “can u portal me to ironforge pls” - they don’t know she’s a risk and just view her with the same lens as every other mage.

That is entirely your call! I’ll mention how I RP my own mage with the curse, but this is by no means the only way to approach the idea of a worgen mage;

With him, in order to stay human, he needs to concentrate somewhat on keeping the curse held back. It’s not a great deal of effort, but it is a conscious part of his mind that is keeping it at bay, so while he’s human he’s never able to dedicate all of his concentration to spellcasting - he’s able to dedicate enough of it to cast spells successfully a majority of the time, but basically his cursed form is him letting go and putting all of his effort into concentrating.

But that’s by no means the only approach - Rosa could avoid her form entirely if she starts to specialize in fire magic so as to not accidentally ignite any of her fur, or to better read books without claws being as likely to damage them. Conversely she could remain in it entirely, using her heightened senses to get better sight of friends and foes, or to hear incoming threats - or as a backup plan. I imagine mages probably carry melee weapons in case a foe gets too close and the extra time to cast spells becomes a hastle - and worgen have their own built-in melee weapons on their hands and in their mouths!

Okay I am going to simply say ‘yes’ to this because that’s hilarious, I love that.

It’s all fun and games until the mage opens a Portal to the bottom of the Ocean and extremely high pressured water shoots out.

This all sounds great, tbh. I’m even kinda jealous, cos I recently made a Worgen Mage myself, and some of those ideas feel ‘Better’ than what I wound up with

Nothing would actually happen unless the mage specifically altered the spell, which is why portals can work underwater and not drain a lake. It’d have to involve removing the water-filtering component on purpose.

I can’t imagine the mad mage who might do this, however…

Hello Rosalena! As a fellow mage roleplayer, I think mage RP is very fun and allows for a lot of freedom in how you approach your character! Playing a novice mage who’s going to learn along the way is a completely valid approach — in fact, my character started as a non-mage and learned everything she knows over the years I’ve played her!

I don’t think your character needs approval from Dalaran to not be considered a hedge mage. For years between the Second War and the Cataclysm, Gilneas was isolated, and so its arcane tradition would have been isolated from Dalaran as well — and I imagine they continued training mages in the interim years.

Relying on enchanted items to boost her weak magic is also, I think, a perfectly valid approach!

As for the worgen form, I see no reason why a worgen mage wouldn’t be able to cast spells in human form. That worgen PCs are forced to assume the worgen form in combat is just a gameplay mechanic. From what I understand, the worgen form is fueled by emotions, particularly rage, so a calm, level-headed mage should be able to work their magic without shifting if they so desire.

Do they? It’s news to me. Teacher-apprentice RP was quite appreciated in the mage RP scene, from what I saw — at least back before Dalaran crashed. My character has had IC teachers and I had a lot of fun with apprentice RP. Unfortunately, now that Dalaran is no more, the mage RP scene is scattered and deprived of an obvious focal point. Still, perhaps your character would find a wandering mage willing to take her as a student?

In the end, whatever you decide, I hope you’ll have fun with your character concept!

I think this sounds like a fun concept. You can get a lot of interesting interactions out of playing a character who is not hyper-competent.

Also I don’t know much of the worgen’s lore beside the quest chains and some tidbits here and there, but if your purpose is to have a “low level” mage that goes through a learning curve… Why not have her be, y’know, a mage apprentice that has just started to train, instead of one who has not progressed in a decade?

It’s not that your idea isn’t feasible, it’s just that, when I think about my characters learning new tricks, I find it easier when they have a relatively fresh motivation.

Thank you so much for taking your time for such detailed reply, I really appriciate it and feel more confident going in to RP with my Worgen now :grinning: Also really loved to hear your examples on how you roleplay yours.
