Looking to take down the Lich King

Hi guys.

I have been playing WOW on and off, for the past decade+, since WOTLK was the latest expansion - I played some Vanilla and TBC as well but only on friends computer.

The thing is, despite having put a lot of hours into the game throughout the years, I dont think I have ever had a character reach the maximum level, just like I have not partaken in defeating the Lich King - whom I remember fondly from Warcraft 3.

So I have now decided to reach that apex, but I was wondering if you could help me with a few questions;

  1. Is this still doable or is WOTLK completely dead?

  2. Which race/class should I choose (I prefer Horde as I remember their zones better)

  3. Would any of you guys be interested in joining me on this journey to the top? My IRL friends who still play the game are WAY above my level.

  4. Is there anything else I should need to know? Perhaps this would be more doable in Retail instead of WOTLK?

I am planning on recording most of this and make a small series out of this - assuming it becomes relevant.

Thanks in advance guys.

Hello newcomer!

Great idea to take down the Lich King. He is truly amazing.

Wrath is far from dead. It is probably one of the most popular MMOs right now.
For the second part: Currently, the Lich King has not been released in Wrath Classic. This means you got plenty of time to play and prepare!
[Small spoiler section]
We are in Phase 2 which is Ulduar where you have to defeat the evil old-god Yogg-Saron. The next Phase (which will release soonish) is Trial of the grand Crusade where you slay some random enemies in a tournament to prepare yourself for the fall of the Lich King. The last Phase will be Icecrown and the Lich King. When will it be released? Nobody knows.

Doesn’t really matter. Play what you friends tell you or just play Horde because you remember their zones better.
Note: If you really want to defeat the Lich King (meaning raiding) then use the website (https://)ironforg.pro/population/classic/ to check which server has the highest population for each faction. You don’t want to be alliance in a horde dominant server as you will have a very hard time finding a raid.

Unfortunately, I don’t have time. I hope you can find someone! Also if you start in a very high population server you will find plenty of people during levelling

Just enjoy your time. Defeating the Lich King is no easy task and you will have to play a lot to see him fall before you.
Yes, on retail it is way more “doable”. You can just enter there raid and one-shot everything. But what’s the fun of it?

The Lich King isn’t available to kill on WOTLK yet, probably not until later in the year, but you have a long road ahead of you anyway so that’s not a problem. WOTLK is very active, but you should play on a High/Full population server, also with consideration for the specific faction population, for Horde that’d be Gehennas, Golemagg, Mograine.

Killing the LK on retail would be an empty, shallow experience and could be achieved within a day, solo. If you want the true experience you need to play WOTLK.

Race/Class - What role do you want to play? A lesser experienced player I would recommend play something with good performance and not too difficult rotation like an Assassination Rogue (Troll), if you want to play Healer the prime choices are Holy Paladin followed by Discipline Priest, if you want to tank the prime choice is Protection Paladin.

Since you lack experience I think you should avoid tanking entirely, healing the Lich King is also no small task, you would need to gain a great understanding and affinity with your chosen healing class. DPS would be the ideal learning role for raiding, Warlocks, Rogues, DK’s and Mages are the top dps choices going forward.

Thank you for the replies, both of you!

As for my own personal experience, I have essentially at some point gotten most classes up to around 40ish so I know my way around most class mechanics.

Which class is actually gonna get me into a raid - when the time comes though?

My original character back then was a Tauren Enhancement Shaman, is that competitive in your opinions? I love the enhancement Shaman playstyle (kinda feels like a more useful Combat Rouge), especially the Feral Wolves and their elemental totems. They seem like more potent CDs than simply Vanishing and running away.

Do you think Enhancement Shaman has any way of getting into a raid?

Enhancement Shaman is definitely a fine choice, though Troll or Orc would be preferable to Tauren, due to having DPS based racials. As for getting into a raid, the ideal process would be joining an appropriate level guild and progressing with them.

If you’ve never done raiding before you have a lot to learn, going into the pugging world would be a demoralising and likely brutal experience that I wouldn’t recommend for your enjoyment or sanity. Finding a guild is going to be a goal in of itself, gaining experience in raiding also vital, learning to improve and adapt your gameplay will also come into play.

You have plenty of time to achieve all this, take it one step at a time.

Thanks bro.

I currently have a 14 Hunter, 19 Priest and 23 Rogue. None of them are really doing it for me, so I think im just gonna go with Enhancement Shaman.

  1. It’s not doable yet, but will be. WotLK is very highly populated on a few select realms, it’s probably not worth rolling on a low or medium realm, though. While leveling make sure to observe your realm discord and be in a guild that stays on top of realm news. In case your faction population decides to move (for whetever real or imaginary reason) you will want to follow them rather than end up stuck on a dead realm.
  2. Play whatever you like, but I’d avoid Warriors (kinda bad right now), Death Knights and ret paladins (overpopulated) unless you are good / fun to be around enough for a guild to bring you despite the class.
  3. Sorry, I barely have enough time to do everything I want to do on my main, let alone level a new alt.
  4. I’m not sure how retail works now, but the experience would be completely different. I think the raid was soloable a few expansions ago? Part of the fun is overcoming something that is challenging for you, rather than just oneshotting the boss.
