i am writing a background for my demon hunter, but I can t really find a clear timeline that would let me know precise dates and also I don’t understand how happened the third war.
so the legion attacked (correct me if Im wrong)
–10 000 years ago (then Illidan wad jailed)
There was already night elves using shadow magic against them but no demon hunter
– in year 20 ish ( the third war, with illidan drinking in the skull of gul dan and fighting in fell wood and all)
– in the events of legion
I would like my dh to be originated from.the third war because it fit the event of legion and I don t want to chain me to a 10 000y old char. But I don’t exactly understand why, how, and who did the legion attacked in the third war.
In the DH prologue you see illidan recruiting, but from where are those elf ? I just know there was battle in mount hyjal but were darkshore, ashenvale and all touched as well ?
Now a smaller question :
Regarding lightforged draenei, can it be “undone” ?
I have a background for a draenei dk in which I would like him to be former Lightforged but the light has left him when he fell to the scourge and all that was making physically lightforged is now gone. Does it exist ?

will be more enjoyable than some scuffed forums explanation
some of the most crucial lore, needed to build an actual understanding of a character or certain events is in the novels
The point of the Third War was to weaken the armies of Azeroth with the Lich King and the scourge to be able to invoke Sargeras in the world without being stopped, like he had been on his two previous attempts (first during the war of the ancients, then through Medhiv and the orcs who provoked the first war). Not only did the scourge manage to destroy the biggest armies of the Eastern Kingdoms, they also provided the Legion with an army of the dead that was very helpful when they went to Kalimdor. Archimonde’s goal was to reach Nordrassil and the second eternity well to do what had almost succeeded during the war of the ancients. That’s when the Night Elves entered the fray.
I’m not too sure about that since I don’t remember what was said and showed about that in WIII. The novel about Illidan should help clear that as Podrudge suggested, but the way I understand it, the demon hunters were Night Elves who sought Illidan in Outland and Blood Elves who came soon after with Kael’thas while the Third War was still raging.
There is no such thing as a Lightforged Draenei who fell to the scourge since the Lightforged were never involved with it. They were still out there fighting the Legion as part of the Army of the Light all around the cosmos when the Third War happened. There was no ‘basic’ Draenei either on Azeroth before BC so the background you want for your character seems a bit strange to me, unless they died during WotLK (and still, they couldn’t be a Lightforged Draenei since these ones came to Azeroth after Legion only). The only Lightforged Draenei DK that exist in the lore are those who died during BFA and were raised by the Ebon Blade.
We don’t know for sure that the Light would necessarily leave a Lightforged Draenei who was raised into undeath. Alonsus Faol is an undead priest known to have kept his ability to channel the Light, and Calia Menethil sort of became an undead through the Light magic of a Naaru, Alonsus Faol and Anduin after Sylvanas killed her. But, since channeling the Light seems to have a lot to do with faith alone, I guess the Light could leave a Lightforged if they start having doubts and feel abandoned but the Light somehow.
