Hi there, not really gaming breaking, but I am trying to understand it.
I am getting 45-55 fps in major cities with every setting maxed out.
Usually I get 110-160 fps in non major hubs.
My system specs are i7 8700, RTX 3080 and 16GB 3600mhz RAM
My CPU usage is 50-65% (some cores higher than others) and GPU usage peaked at 63%.
So if CPU and GPU both aren’t being taxed, what is my bottleneck?
In a spot with many players, always the CPU in WoW.
High FPS in WoW are very dependant on a high IPC CPU.
Your CPU is a bit dated but still ok.
Though you will never get 110-160 FPS in a crowded Oribos or any other city with that 8700.
For comparison until a week ago i was playing on a Ryzen 3900X.
In Oribos i had about 80-90 FPS with an average amount of players.
Upgraded to a Ryzen 5800X3D, logged in at the same spot where i logged out, 185-195 FPS.
Your I7-8700 is about the same speed in WoW than my old 3900X.
That sounds more like an outdated addon or UI issue.
Have you checked the FPS with all addons disabled?
Also you should try DX11 and DX12, depending on the system it can make a noticable difference.
I have that same CPU, well, I have the K version, overclocked to 4.8GHz, but, yeah, its not high-end anymore. Its mid-range.
That said, I think you are expecting too much from it with 110-160fps in major cities.
For example I only get 80-90fps in major cities.
But 45-55 is too low, start by removing all your addons, yes removing, not “deactivating”. This will show if its an addon issue, then you can go from there.
Disabling an addon, only turns it off, but its LUA code is still injected into the client, and can still cause issues. The only diagnostic way to rule out an addon, is to uninstall it.
Okay, so I actually just recently started playing again. So atm I have no addons, I am back after 5 years of not playing. So I haven’t gotten around to any like mods or add-ons yet.
Yeah I realise it’s not a high end CPU anymore, I am just confused about the performance. I looked at a CPU usage program and all cores are around 40-60% usage.
I am on EU silvermoon. I get the same fps in Kul Tiras as well. Maybe I need to play with the settings a bit more.
Sorry I’m replying from the battlenet app so I’m not 100% sure how to quote.
Ok so I was actually gonna upgrade my gpu, to like a 4080, but if you guys say I must rather go CPU upgrade. I can do that as well.
What do you guys think?
I’ll list my full specs here;
Msi gaming z trio 3080 (10gb version)
Corsair Vengeance 3600mhz (xmp on)
Asus Prime Z370 A
I7 8700 non k
850w antec HCG
1tb western digital ssd 2.5"
And then obviously I’m gaming at ultrawide resolution.
So I must look at IPC? So basically single core high MHz?
That GPU upgrade won’t make a difference if your CPU is bottlenecking most of the time.
Even for more modern games the 8700 will bottleneck in some already.
For example, in the Dragonflight Beta, while leveling in the new zones on settings 8 (2070S on a 1440P LG 144Hz display), my FPS increased by around 30 only from upgrading my CPU.
Basically a 12 or 13K Intel or a 5000 or 7000 Ryzen.
Since you will need to upgrade your motherboard too, i would go for the Intels unless you want to futureproof for a premium price, then get the AM5 Ryzen 7000 setup.
I would recommend getting a 12600K or 13600K and keep your DDR4 RAM, much cheaper than the AM5 Boards + DDR5.
