Low FPS in WoW despite high-end PC. RT Shadows not working either

Hi,

I’ll keep it short and concise. I’m having low fps (around 80 fps) on a newly built high-end PC when playing WoW Cataclysm:

32 GB of Ram DDR5

Ryzen 5 9600x CPU

RT 9070 XT GPU

M.2 SSD

Motherboard tomahawk b650

Settings are max, except ray tracing shadows which are disabled. I don’t know if this is an issue from my end or wow is not optimized for AMD gpus or drivers or something else. BTW, I’m up-to-date with all the drivers.

80 FPS is FAR TOO LOW if you ask me for this grid. In same places I get to even 70 FPS. I used to pull way more fps with an older PC, which had rtx 2080 gpu, intel i7 8700 cpu, 16 GB RAM DDR4, and a slower SATA SSD.

I don’t believe this old game is THAT demanding. It shouldn’t have 80 fps.

For wow cata, GPU utilization sits at 98% with 6609 MB memory utilization. The temperature of the gpu and cpu are below 50 degrees celcius (122 fahrenheit).

For Modern WoW, the performance is even lower, even with rt off. While playing wow, I see the game only consume 7.7 memory RAM of gpu and it sists at 99% gpu memory utilization, despite the fact that the gpu has 16 GB of Ram.

Edit: Found another possible issue. I believe RT Shadows don’t work, in any of the WoW games. WoW classic, WoW cataclysm, Modern WoW.

There are no issues with settings in the control panel. The option for RT shadows is not greyed out. As a matter of fact, I can select which quality I want for RT shadows, however, it doesn’t matter what I choose, visually it changes NOTHING.

No matter what I choose, Disabled or Good, or High quality option for RT shadows, it changes nothing and the result is the same!

What resolution you are running? Maxed GPU utilization sounds wrong as I am hitting just 70-80% at 4k resolution (capped at 120 fps) with 5800X3D and 9070XT - though this was idling outside Dornogal without other players nearby. Inside city FPS drops as CPU etc. are more of a limiting factor.

What sort of results you get from. eg. 3DMark Steel Nomad benchmark?

3440x1440p for both wow cataclysm and modern wow. From what I’ve read, GPU Utilization is not memory related. It’s just showing that the game is using 99% of your GPU’s processing power, not 99% of its memory.

However, this does not explain the poor performance. I can run much more demanding and newer games such as Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 with 85-130 fps with all settings to max.

For modern WoW, in elwynn forest I get 50 fps with max settings but RT disabled.

First things first, i just have to be blunt but you should have bought an X3D chip.
Even a 7600X3D would have been alot better for WoW.
There is nothing high-end about that 9600X.
WoW is all about CPU performance and the X3D cache gives it a huge boost over non X3D Ryzen.

Now to a couple of things you could check since it’s a new system:

-is resizable bar (smar access memory for AMD) enabled in the BIOS (above 4G decoding)?

-is your RAM running at max speed (XMP profile enabled)? How fast is your RAM anyways? It should be 6000+.
-do you have 2 identical sticks running in the correct dual channel slots?

-did you install all AMD chipset drivers?

-did you disable stuff like the xbox gamebar?

-try enbabling/disabling HAGS (hardware accelerated GPU scheduling)

-set renderscale to 100% in WoW, it is still buggy

-disable max foreground fps or set a limit matching your refreshrate
