[MacOS] mouse side buttons not recognized

I play on a macbook and have returned from a 2 month hiatus and the side buttons (4&5) on my mouse no longer register.
Outside the game the mouseclicks do register, but inside the wow client they don’t.
Not in the default keybinds and not with addons.

I’ve tried using a different mouse, updating drivers, and turning on the mmo mouse setting inside wow but to no avail.

Any suggestions for solutions would be much appreciated.

Well, this is a blast from the past - but still, since there hasn’t been an answer:

In order for buttons 4 and 5 to be recognized in the game, they have to be mapped to something within the operating system (and usually also the mouse driver software) first. On my personal setup these buttons are mapped to numbers 9 and 0, to make it easier to trigger skills on the right-hand side of the bar.
