It says “instant” cast in the game, but it actually takes a while to cast due to the animation, so you cannot wait until the last moment to cast it and run away. I think these sort of things are quite confusing especially to newer players and it should state the actual time it takes to make you invisible.
The tooltip also says “Turns you invisible over 3 seconds”.
To ability to trigger the start of this 3 second is “instant”. Unlike a spell like “Blizzard” which also has “over 8 second” but requires a 2 sec cast before the 8sec effect is triggered. Instant also means it can’t be interrupted, can be cast while moving, etc
Yeah, this ^
End of thread.
As a new player I’d ask “what tooltip”? It doesn’t state any of this in the spell description. It may be known to all the old timers, but not to newer players. This stuff needs to be more transparent, why can’t it state in the description “takes x seconds to cast”?
Tooltip = Spell/Ability description
It does
Easy on the guy.
I just discovered that Blizzard removed the option to show/hide spell tooltips from the in game options. May be it’s turned off in your UI.
To turn them on type:
/console UberTooltips 1
To turn them off type:
/console UberTooltips 0
It’s labelled as instant because it doesn’t require a cast and, as point out, specifically states that it takes 3 seconds to activate and drop the aggro.
Thanks. I’ve found that many WoW players aren’t very new player friendly and they’ll rather pick on you than help.
My bad on this one, just completely misunderstood the spell description
There’s some other questions I have about the mage too, for example, what is clearcasting? It doesn’t seem to state that anywhere, just expects you to know what it is. I assume it’s those two lines that occasionally appear next to your character?
Any passive effect or spell can be found in your Spellbook (default keybind P), regardless of whether they’re talents or not. Clearcasting can be found in your spellbook in the Arcane Mage tab as a passive, image attached.

And yeah, many would do better to help newbies instead of pick on them.
Clearcasing is a passive talent that arcane mages have
The tooltip says “For each 1250 mana you spend, you have 1% chance to gain Clearcasting, making your next Arcane Missiles or Arcane Explosion free and channel 20% faster”.
So it’s basically a proc that gives you some benefit. There are more talents that interact with clearcasting. For example “Slipstream” talent causes clearcasting to allow Arcane Missiles to be channelled while moving, “Amplification” talent increase the number of missiles fired, etc.
Thanks, but I was wondering, are those two curved lines that appear next to your characters a sign of clearcasting being active?
Yes, they are.
The tooltip is perfectly clear. And even if it wasn’t, you’ll learn it very fast. It does apply an instant effect, but that effect doesn’t make you invisible. Just try using it once out of combat and it’s evident what happens.
Also there’s Greater Invisibility, which does actually turn you invisible instantly.
This is what I was looking for. I hate it when they use terms and explain all that the terms will do but don’t actually explain how you are supposed to know they are active. Random graphics appear on screen and you’re just like “ok maybe this is it then”
Isn’t there a talent that can make this ability procc more often.
“Illuminated thoughts” talent increases proc chance by 5%/10%.
The talents I mentioned before were just examples not a full list of talents that affect clearcasting (or are affected by clearcasting).
P.S. I play Druid as my main char. When I play my mage alt, which I don’t play very often, I usually play frost spec not arcane. So I am not an expert in arcane mages.
Are you confusing it with Greater Invisibility?
