Wanted to ask you guys for your opinion about mage, I’m playing arcane , got item level 361
I haven’t played for long time in WoW, came back after 6 years break, playing as mage as I remember I had lots of fun with him back ago,
I’m type of pvp, BG and generally playing against other is getting me biggest joy however I’m struggling with one thing - its mage defend which seems to be made from toilet paper - srsly, i got 361 item level which i know its not any near of “top” but its just soo frustrating how quickly other players are killing me , honestly, worst are close range characters like warrior/paladin/rouge , its taking them 5 sec to kill me , ain’t even chance to react properly as im already dying
Also what super annoy me is HP - right now I got 182 k HP… 182?! its absolute joke - when i see other with 300/400 k of HP I already know there is no point start fight as he would have to stand for 15 sec and do nothing or I would have to have crit hit in every spell to make me any chance stand against
Generally I have feeling mage is overall weak, I mean damage is nothing amazing, defend pretty much made from toilet paper - fair enough mobility is there , blink etc but again - pretty much each character have some sort of stuns, I can go away from player but if it take him couple sec to kill me then I’m very limited…
That’s why I wanted ask you guys what are your thoughts, I’m not any near of “pro” , I’m aware I just might not know how to play him…
More and more I’m thinking to switch to warrior/paladin or any other character with some sensible defend/HP…
Sorry, what you mean? im right now aiming to buy pvp gear from vendor for sigil storm ( 385 lvl ) + in meantime some pieces for conquest points ( 389 lvl ) - is that what you mean?
Glacial Spike is literally the hardest hitting spell Mage spell under normal conditions across all of our specs, only Arcane Barrage hits harder and that requires mulitple conditions to be met for it to hit it’s hardest.
Even then Glacial Spike has a 3 second cast and you have to generate Icicles from 3-5 other (far weaker) spells to be able to use it. It’s not something we can fire off on a salvo.
Storm Sigil gear is not PvP gear, it’s PvE gear.
PvP gear is bought for various PvP currencies, like honor, conquest and bloody tokens and they have a far lower item level in PvE content than they do in PvP content.
The honor gear is 340 item level as a baseline (in PvE content) but when you enter PvP areas in war mode, arenas or battlegrounds, the gear becomes 411 item level.
There are plenty of specs that can crit similar or higher than that, in some cases no build-up - Elemental Blast, Wake of Ashes, Flame Breath (max charge or with Tip the Scales), Full Moon, etc.
Even classes that can’t do that much in a single hit can do so with multiple effects ticking/hitting at the same time.
Also, as a Demon Hunter, you have literally no right to complain, a brainless spec with ridiculous passive healing and absurd mobility, you could be missing half your fingers and still put up a decent fight.
You play as dh, have possibility to take the hunt, essence break and blade dance in eb with 2 of that abilities hitting harder that glacial spike?
Also they don’t need any build up and 3s cast in frost school that locks down your save and root abilities. Okay.
Seems that it doesn’t help because if we open ladder we can see that representation of havoc dh is few times more on high ratings than all 3 specs of mage. Also you cry on frost mage that is one of the least popular specs in the game and one of the weakest while playing the most represented and most fotm spec in the game. Shed your tears, you have no right to cry on such difficult to realise ability while having few instant cast abilities hitting more lol.
If your 361 gear is not gear that scales in battlegrounds you will be at a big disadvantage.
Buy the full set of gear called “crimson” from the Auction House. This is green level gear of low level but scales high in Battlegrounds. It is essentially the first “tier” of pvp gear and you can buy it straight away.
Use honor to buy the blue gear. As you are Alliance you will be earning extra honor. The blue gear (Crimson Aspirant I think) scales to 411 in pvp. Start with the 2 trinkets.
***You don’t have to upgrade this gear with more honor unlike Shadowlands, it’s maxed out in pvp already. Only upgrade pieces when you have spare honor and a full set. Upgrading it only helps with pvE.
Once you have full honor blue gear you will be competitive. Use the guides online though for the best rotation and talent sets as these make a big difference in pvp (like for example, take dragons breath etc)
Some players will have by now say 5 or 6 pieces of conquest gear (purple) from rated pvp. Luckily in this expansion there is only one item level of this, 424. So the worst case scenario is you are 411 and a fully geared rated player is 424,.
Conquest is easier to get that before. Pick up the weekly quests from the pvp room in Obsidian Enclave. Try Solo Shuffle just to get some conquest points. Start by buying the purple trinkets. Just get full blue before trying solo shuffle.
Thank you very much, didnt realised its actually pve gear, thought: better lvl than better in pvp
Can you please explain me why this gear is for pvp? im guessing its because of stats? can see that gear for honor have versality pretty much in each item - is that why its for pvp?
Thank you, make sense, I just noticed that gear for overflow points doesnt scale up
Question: should I take staff or dagger and off-hand? Or it doesnt matter ? ( Btw if i got dagger and off hand - can i transmog it into staff? XD - i just like staff look )
It depends on what secondary stats you want, you can get a greater variety of stats between a 1hander and an offhand than you can through a 2handed weapon.
Under normal conditions, no.
However, you can transmog to your spec’s Artifact Weapon appearances regardless of the weapons you’re wielding.
So if you’ve got Ebonchill (when specced Frost) or Aluneth (when specced Arcane) appearances from Legion, you can use those when you’re wielding a 1hander and an offhand.
