Has there ever been discussion about tanking mage pets with game devs commenting about that?
I don’t understand why don’t we have such option already. It wouldn’t be raid/dungeon/pvp viable anyway, so where are they?

That would kind of take away from the class fantasy that mages have, which has always been high damage but low survivability, with a lot of tools for kiting. So instead of tanking damage via a pet or by yourself, you shouldn’t take damage if you play correctly.
Don’t get me wrong, I’d love a tank mage pet. However, I doubt Blizzard would do that.
Warlocks has pets and tankiness, we have supreme mobility. Solo content is easier with warlocks but the mobility is better for surviving in group end game content generally.
Aye. Somewhat hope still I would have option so sacrifice mobility to gain elemental tank whilst questing. x)
