Mage RP question

Morning Argent Dawn,
I am returning to RP and have Been thinking of trying news concept rather than “Human with Stick fights things”(no offense to humans with sticks). I would love to try out mage RP, once I read up on lore a bit.
Which faction do you think has more “mage RP” where I can learn dome dos and don’ts od magic rp? And to clarify by mage rp I don’t mean some random bartender mage in SW who casts without thoughts or limits. (Once again, no offense. If that is what you like, more power to you. I am just looking for something else).

From my experience, the best place to find mage RP is — perhaps to no surprise — Dalaran. It has regular events like the Mage Gathering and the twice-a-year-or-so Magic Faire. It’s neutral, and both factions are represented. Many of the mage RPers there struck me as quite cerebral and willing to dive into the theoretical underpinnings of magic, though admittedly, like all RP, Dalaran RP took significant losses after the great exodus of 2021.

My character is only an apprentice for now, not yet a full-fledged mage, but I’d be glad to get to know your character if they visit Dalaran!

Yeah, like Lintian said Dalaran is likely your best bet, literal magic capitol of Azeroth and has a large active community now, with events more tailored to magic these days, pretty sure there is one or two Kirin Tor type guilds active there aswell these days that engage in alot of events, campaigns and events are fairly frequent with the community also.

As an alternative to Dalaran, I’ve always found it greatRP to pursue apprenticeships with characters you meet out in the world, that you enjoyed interacting with. If you’re RPing am apprentice, of course.

You’ll probably be able to find some degree of mage RP on both sides, it’s more a question about what fantasy fits your taste better and if/when it comes to numbers the Alliance will probably have an upper hand in general just due to being more populated. Other than that it’s up to taste. The Horde has Blood Elf magisters, for example, while the Alliance could always use a mage or two on the battlefield or even as advisors/court conjurers/etc.

As for actual learning, I’ll go with what the others have said and recommend Dalaran which is a natural hub for mage RP. There should be one or two Kirin Tor themed guilds around with the added benefit of faction neutrality. Kirin Tor Intelligence comes to mind and, on the Horde side, Sunreavers. Just find a nice guild or some fellow mage RP’ers to engage with and possibly start an apprenticeship.

Considering mages are the academics of Azeroth, that image isn’t too odd tbf, given a lot of students end up working at McDonalds. Joke aside, I doubt any serious mage RP’er will have time to work in a tavern. Some people seem to forget, but the whole point of being a mage is about researching new spells and knowledge. If anything you’d be spending half your time either traveling or stuck in libraries.

No, no, no! You’re doing it wrong.
First of all, you have to be a human or an elf at around the age of twenty-five or less. Then, for good measure, slap on yourself the title of Archmage (!) because it is a cool title, and you’re cool right? Furthermore it tells everyone you’re really powerful so every individual at the Inn should take you seriously!

As an archmage you’re very inquisitive and open-minded, and that translates into your character having a sharp tongue with the bartender and the others around the tavern. And yes, you have to spend 80% of your time at the Inn. Studying and fighting? Theory-crafting? Research? Tsk. You can do those activities in the background. Also you’re an archmage, so you don’t have to study anymore: you’re a cool kid now.

Occasionally have him do some archmage feat that barely anyone cares about, like throwing a protective shield akin to Thalyssra, but around the whole Inn when undesired people want to get inside.

Afterwards you have to spend your evenings flirting with ladies. Am I missing something?

Yes, remember: your mount has to be magical and epic. Maybe you’ve befriended a Nether dragon and are now best buddies? Or maybe you just have a big, overcompensating… water elemental. Don’t make your mount too original - ie. an elemental made of beer is a cool concept but you don’t want to look too eccentric, that’s too much thought for an archmage! What are you doing there, trying to create character depth and unique quirks, or getting laid? Yeah, loser, start speaking about your “giant balls of fire” with that brunette goblin! And remember: always introduce yourself as an archmage.”

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how you role-play a mage.

Who hurt you?

Excuse me, my fellow and gentle colleague with a fancy undercut, but I believe that those statements are wrongly separated, when in fact, they should go together as the nether dragon should also be able to assume (preferably) Elven form and fill the romantic void of our young archmage’s love life.

Thanks I hate it.

Sweet summer child.

Hi there.
Most things were already said, but in general I think among Humans and among Blood Elves you’ll find more Mage RP, with there being some guilds as well, besides the Dalaran RP.
I also like Highborne Mages but I don’t know how many RP them now …

You’re a genius!

Ehhhm… actually no, the more I type this dumb joke post the more I feel the looming shadow of the banhammer at my back.

It’s okay I’m 90% sure I thought of the same joke and decided to not write it for the same reason

I have a morbid curiosity to read it now.

If you intend to RP in a guild it can pay off to contact guilds you are interested in to ask if they are currently recruiting mages and/or mage apprentices (depending if you want to tutor under another mage or not).

Alliance has the definitive edge on finding this kind of RP just because its much more populated than the Horde. Dalaran is also an option, though I find the Mage orientated RP there to be more centered around debates and theorycrafting rather than any actual adventuring, which doesn’t have my fancy – but maybe you enjoy that kind of RP!
